Go By
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Go on parade and fade
Hit the scene and slow
Spending all your time with some girl
You'll never get to know

Wound up tight
Dressed all in white
Some torn main sail
Blowing out to drift
Leave you even if

You live up in your head
Scared of every little noise
Someone's always breaking in accidentally
Using nothing but their voice

Shrill and small
Echo down the hall
Repeating pet names
See it in your eyes
You're only passing by

Go by, go by
Go by, go by

Someone's in the way
Of pretty words and inside slurs
All the things they have to say to perform
The work that they've rehearsed

It's a waste of time
I'd put it behind me once and for all
And let the hype decline
If the problem wasn't mine

Go by, go by
Go by, go by
Go by, go by
Go by, go by

Overall Meaning

In Elliott Smith's song Go By, he seems to be singing about someone who is caught up in the social scene and putting on a façade for others, but not truly connecting with anyone. The lyrics "Go on parade and fade, hit the scene and slow" suggest that this individual is making an appearance at social events, but isn't really being present or genuine. The line "Spending all your time with some girl you'll never get to know" adds to this idea that this person is more concerned with superficial relationships than with actually getting to know people.

Smith also touches on the idea of anxiety and paranoia in the lyrics "You live up in your head, scared of every little noise, someone's always breaking in accidentally using nothing but their voice." These lines suggest that this individual is constantly anxious and paranoid about others breaking into their thoughts and intruding on their privacy, even if it's just through conversation.

The chorus "Go by, go by" seems to be a call to this person to let go of this superficial and anxious way of living and just move on. The repeated phrase also conveys a sense of finality to the message of the song.

Overall, the lyrics of Go By show Elliott Smith's ability to convey complex emotions with just a few well-chosen words. Through this song, he touches on themes of social isolation, anxiety, and the need for authenticity.

This song is about the messed-up entertainment industry. It is about the way that the entertainment industry messes people up, the artists, and their audiences.

"Inside slurs" - 2:05
Only those involved in the industry understand "inside slurs". An "inside slur" can be used against someone in front of an audience and still, only that individual will understand the cruelty being expressed.

"Parade and fade" - 0:08
Go on. Have fun in the spotlight. Then, when you step offstage, you will wither away without anyone knowing.
Elliott Smith mentions this "appear then disappear immediately after" thing a lot...
In Speed trials, “it's just a brief smile crossing” his face. "It" is fame. A moment of happiness that crosses by and is gone.
Elliott Smith references this “brief smile” in his other songs. The first verse of “New Disaster” describes the phenomenon.
“The ghost of your smile… its been here and disappeared, it’s hanging around aloofly for awhile, gradually gone, it’s pleasing and freezing”
The experience of having this brief smile is pleasing… it crosses by and leaves you freezing.
In “Independence Day”,
“Gonna spend the day
Higher than high… You only live a day but it’s brilliant anyway… don’t go too far, stay who you are.” This means: Don’t get caught up in the fame, you understudy (not a full-time actor). It only lasts a day.

Warning: The explanation of the lyrics go off-topic, here. Very interesting information, however.
( For example, all of the members of the biggest band- The Beatles- were replaced in 1966 after they stopped touring, and barely anyone outside of the entertainment industry knows it. Well, now you know it. The original Beatles are not famous anymore. They have not been famous for over 50 years. The original Paul McCartney- his real name is John Halliday... Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Richard Starkey are just stage names-
Anyway, the original Paul McCartney was once the most famous man in the world. Now, he has gotten fired from his custodian job and he was kicked out of his own home. He has no family and lives alone. Barely anyone knows this sad fact. If this intrigues you, search "Colin Unwin" on YouTube. That's the original John Lennon's YouTube channel. In his first video, at 3:07, you can see him with the original Paul. He also has Facebook where he posts lots of clues. If this confuses you, feel free to ask questions. I'd know the answer... here's a full explanation:

All Beatles interviews, drama, and documentaries from after late 1966 is staged/fake/actors. All of the original beatles are alive & they're still friends. Their contract ended in late 1966 so they quit and got normal jobs. Paul, John, George, and Richard are stage names. The stage names allowed them to be replaced by new beatles without giving up their real identities. The original beatles real names are colin unwin (john), john halliday (paul), terry johnston (george), and mark (last name unknown) (ringo). The original john, colin unwin, is still very involved with the beatles. he pretends to be a fan Colin has Facebook where he has posted clues for over a decade, a YouTube channel, and a book called "i've just seen a place i can't forget walking in the footsteps of the beatles" After Colin quit, he had a job of giving tours of john lennon's childhood home, which was really colin's childhood home. he did this with john hallida y, the original paul. His first video from his YT channel is called "personnel lost tapes of iconic beatles locations". It was filmed in 2003 by a tourist. You can see Colin and John (john and paul) giving a tour at 3:07 of the video.

Fun fact, Colin's father was the comedian Stanley Unwin who created the nonsense language "Unwinese". Take one look at Unwinese and you'll see that Colin was inspired by his father when writing "In his own write".

There is more proof from 1964 when an interviewer called "John" Colin and "Paul" John. Ask if you want it)

"You live up in your head, scared of every little noise. Someone's always breaking in accidentally, using nothing but their voice" - 0:49
The person's trauma can be triggered by simple words. Certain words can feels like violent invasions of privacy to this person. This person has been in the frightening business of the entertainment industry.

"Someone's in the way of pretty words and inside slurs, All the things they have to say to perform the work that they've rehearsed" - 2:02
The scared, traumatized person is that someone. The person is being taunted and rebuked for being scared. They're in the way of the show- the "pretty words" are the lines that have carefully been put together in the most perfect-sounding way. In other words, a script.
Shakespeare wrote, "all the world's a stage." Well, at least in the entertainment industry, the world is a stage. The musicians are actors, newspeople are actors, the interviewer and interviewee have stage names and fake their deaths.
So many staged events, like loved celebrities faking their deaths, which hurts their audience.

Warning: I go off-topic again.
(Even Colin, the original Lennon, expressed sadness for the fans believing the fake death of John Lennon on his Facebook. Of course, he didn't have to fake the death because he was replaced before then. But he said he goes to the grave and feels sad.)

"Echo down the hall, Repeating pet names" - 1:12
Someone is paranoid, hearing someone else saying their name to them in a taunting way, echoing down the hall.
This is a scary song. Someone's nightmare is being described to them.

So, now that you've been told this, how would you sing "Go By" differently? Grittier? Sadder-sounding? You should do a cover of it.

If this explanation interested you, I could explain other Elliott Smith songs with the same meaning. I'd be happy to.
