Mr. Goodmorning
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw you with mr. goodmorning
Some velvet rope on the curb
He gave me a wink for a warning
I saw the "Do Not Disturb Me"

Don't try reading my mind, it isn't gonna get you anywhere
Going by, just between us
I won't cry i wasn't even there

I made the interior landscape
Where he's been dancing with you
Fell in like a leaf on the water
Nowhere that i'm going to now

Don't try reading my mind, it isn't gonna get you anywhere
Going by, just between us
I won't cry i wasn't even there

But you could do but you won't
I want future and you don't
If a kind of mouth is laughing out

I saw you with Mr. Goodmorning
There's been some others before
And when you've decided he's boring
That's when he'll think he adores you

Don't try reading my mind, it isn't gonna get you anywhere

Going by, just between us
I won't cry i wasn't even there

Overall Meaning

The song "Mr. Goodmorning" by Elliott Smith is a melancholic exploration of love, loss, and jealousy. The opening lines refer to seeing someone with Mr. Goodmorning, whose identity is unclear, but seems to represent someone the singer is jealous of. The reference to velvet rope on the curb suggests some kind of exclusive or VIP access that the singer does not have. Mr. Goodmorning then gives the singer a wink, which could be interpreted as either a warning or a taunt.

The chorus is a repetition of the line "Don't try reading my mind, it isn't gonna get you anywhere," suggesting that the singer is closed off and guarded, and perhaps resentful of others trying to understand or connect with him. The second verse then shifts to a description of the interior landscape the singer has created in his own mind, where he imagines Mr. Goodmorning dancing with the person he loves. The image of falling like a leaf on the water suggests a sense of helplessness and surrender to the situation.

The final verse is perhaps the most bitter and poignant, with the lines "You could do but you won't / I want future and you don't / If a kind of mouth is laughing out." These lines suggest that the singer and the person he loves have different priorities and desires, and that he is resigned to the fact that they will not be together in the future. The song ends with another repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the idea that the singer is isolated and unreachable.

I saw you with Mr. Goodmorning
Some velvet rope on the curb
He gave me his stormiest warning
You hung your head like a sign that said
"Do not disturb"

Don't try being part of my life
Isn't gonna get you anywhere
Go by, just between us
You know, don't you know how much I care?

I made the interior landscape
You'll see me walking through
Ruining the ruins of roofs
All of the beautiful things that I made once for you

Don't try being part of my life
Isn't gonna get you anywhere
Go by, just between us
You know, don't you know how much I care?
Like nothing happened at all

Don't come back
Don't hang around
And don't call, I'll be kicking your memory's ass
Like a shot glass

I saw you with Mr. Goodmorning
I saw you with Mr. Goodmorning

Don't try being part of my life
Isn't gonna take your pain away
I'm fine; nothing's wrong with my life
Feeling stronger every single day
Feeling stronger every single day

I love you way to much Elliott! I think its become a problem, its unhealthy to obsess over anything especially a person you dont know. ive let my admiration turn to envy then like a drug I, crave more of it, while fighting myself over the feeling of inferiority. Its all I've ever wanted for myself yet he's set the bar to unattainable hights for me to raise it higher, unless its involving drugs then we might be on par

@shanegarm

Describes my whole growing up period. I hope you're clean and healthy now

@0larue0

Elliott made me better in every way. I hope you figure it out. Drugs were a small part of his story. Don't let them become your whole story. "Pretty soon you'll find its the only little part of your life you're keeping together."

@MrByebyelove

SO glad you've uploaded this. Was Grand Mal ever released in physical copy form?

@shanegarm
