New Monkey
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Here come the sidewalk boss again
Telling me how I can't cave in
That I'm a study in black
Need a pat on the back
I look up and smile
A picture of dissatisfaction
That he can only see as a junkie
Though I might be straight as an arrow
He's busy shaking hands with my monkey
Busy shaking hands with my monkey well I go in the car
Straight to the bar
Where my sweetie pours the beer
For the millions of fans ignoring the bands
He's in my ear
Wants me to live in denial
Says you've gotta settle for something
Though it might not be really living
Anything is better than nothing
Anything is better than nothing

No actor action man gonna move in to take my place
I'll be pumping out the product
Just a total waste.

Look at your hands unoccupied
Look at the lengths you'll go to hide
You're under the veil
Pretending to fail
Gotta whole lot of empty time left to go
Now you've gotta fill it with something
I know what you can do don't you know
Anything is better than nothing.

No actor action man gonna move in to take my place
I'll be pumping out the product
Just a total waste

I'm here with my cup
Afraid to look up
This is how I spend my time
Lazying around, head hanging down
Stuck inside my imagination
Busy making something from nothing
Pictures of hope and depression
Anything is better than nothing
Anything is better than nothing
Anything is better than nothing
Anything is better than nothing

@Danielle Marin unsure about the original Meme MC thing, but my experience getting into his music was SUPER similar to yours, just my introduction was in 2016 due to sheer luck..... i think he has that real magnetic pull on people. if u [not 2 B pretentious] ""Get"" the music, it's instant.

one day i heard one of his songs and i had to hear everything.

life can be divided cleanly ibto two parts..... Pre-Elliott-Smith-Discovery and Post-Elliott-Smith-Discovery. lmao.

i'm glad you've found him as important as i [and a Metric Fuckton of other people] have... really and truly a one of a kind person and artist.

(if you [or anyone else seeing this] haven't heard his cover of "all my rowdy friends have settled down" PLEASE do. there's a live covers bootleg album for him floating around out there online with like 50+ cover songs, and i cannot recommend it enough (+ i'm not even That Into Covers...))

[[also. if you havent heard the ween song Baby Bitch. its Clearly inspired deeply by elliott smiths Very early music, and it gets caught in my head constantly..... ALSO ALSO [sorry. he has this effect on me. im sorry] his first band heatmiser has a lot of incredible songs + is fully worth diving into if you haven't already]]

@Rowan S I’ve seen that cover of rowdy and I actually found him by confusing him with another artist. Heard sweet adeline on the radio and thought it was a song that I heard a while ago

What is "meme MC music"? I see your comment is about 4 months old so I am no longer officially the only person left in the world who had never heard of Elliott and his music until stumbling onto it one day (in June of 2019) and feeling as though I've been living in some bizarre parallel reality where ES did not exist.
Someone included a track of his in their video and I was really taken by the song and clicked the link and from there I have been listening to his stuff ever since and still having the awesome pleasure of hearing tracks for the first time.
It was probably within an hour of listening to his music that first day where I also learned he had died in 2003 - I had already been so taken with his music after an hour's worth of listening that I felt deeply saddened to know this exceptional artist was no longer here with us.
I would honestly love to know what your thoughts have been since checking out his music - I don't want to assume but if this song got you started, it got even better for you from here - though of course this song is excellent and I love it.
I had heard "Needle in the Hay" when I rented Royal Tennenbaum's back in 2002 but unfortunately that sing didn't do it for me enough to look into the artist, as I do with all soundtrack music that grabs me. I only saw Good Will Hunting once in the late 90s and honestly don't remember Miss Misery - likely because as with "Needle", it's one of my least favorites. Maybe I subconsciously just despise Hellyweird so much that I have an aversion to soundtrack songs now.
My first ES song I heard last June that made me aware of him was "Can't Make a Sound".

' Stuck inside my imagination busy making something from nothing. '

Fucking spot on.

Chromatic Static

This might be my favorite Elliott Smith song, as impossible as that is to say. It just always makes me happy. The uber-catchy melodicism and the life-affirming mantra “anything is better than nothing” grip me inescapably. I love and miss you, Elliott. ❤️

This is my favorite song he's done. Love it!
