No Life
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No life
No life
Everything you need
To keep it together
To keep you off the street

No life
Once I used to see
A beautiful stranger
Walking next to me

Sometimes it's a long time coming

No life
No life
Still a part alive
For offering nothing
You get it in return

No life
Pushed away the hand

For they might've found you
Found some other man

Overall Meaning

The song "No Life" by Elliott Smith is a hauntingly somber track that explores themes of solitude, desperation, and loss. The lyrics seem to center around a person who has lost their way in life, feeling as if they have no purpose or meaning. The repeated refrain of "No life" emphasizes this feeling of emptiness and hopelessness. The opening lines suggest that the only thing keeping this person from being homeless and destitute is the possessions they have, which are barely enough to hold them together.

However, the second verse hints at the possibility of something more. The singer remembers a "beautiful stranger" who once walked beside them, suggesting the possibility of human connection and the hope for a better life. But the chorus returns with its bleak refrain, suggesting that any spark of life or hope quickly fades away.

The final lines of the song suggest that the singer has pushed away someone who could have helped them, perhaps out of fear or a lack of trust. So in the end, they continue to wander through life with no real purpose or direction.

Overall, "No Life" is a poignant reflection on the struggle to find meaning in a world that can seem cold and uncaring. It's a reminder of how even the smallest gestures of kindness and connection can make a world of difference, but how difficult it can be to accept that help when you feel lost and alone.

The more I listen to ES, the more I am convinced he is as good as Lennon and McCartney. These songs just don't age, and his chords and melodies are beyond incredible. Crazy good.

He's if Lennon had the music theory knowledge of George Martin. Deadly combo.

Not to be crass, but, I think the word you’re looking for is “better”

I’m 37. My parents had the Beatles. I love the Beatles. But our generation had Elliot Smith. A bit more my speed.

I can't believe how much stuff I've never heard is here, songs that over a decade into my reverent adoration of his music & mind are now still expanding me & blowing new rooms out in my heart, breaking gently into old ones that have been locked, even if just for a moment. what a beautiful person. thank you again & again, Elliott

Jekyl Whispy my thoughts exactly. It's almost like he never left us. I am certain that if that ridiculous hoe he was with didn't stab him until he was murdered , then he just faked his death and is releasing music into the world anonymously. I say that because this is more plausible than the ridiculous assertion that he committed suicide. Legal disclaimer : Jennifer chiba is not a gardening tool or anything else other than an individual, and to infer otherwise is not my intention
