No Name #4
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For a change she got out before he hurt her bad
Took her records and clothes
And pictures of her boy
It really made her sad

Packed it up and didn't look back
I'm okay lets just forget all about him
The car was cold and it smelled like old cigarettes and pine
In her bag I saw things she drew when she was mine

Like this one here
Her alone nobody near
What a shame lets just not talk about it
No it doesn't look like you

But you did wear cowboy boots
That's your fame
There's no question about it
Once we got back inside

With one ear to the ground
I was ready to hide
'Cause I don't know who's around
And you look scared

It's our secret do not tell okay?
Let's just not talk about it

Don't tell okay?
Let's just forget all about it

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song No Name #4 by Elliott Smith describe a woman who has left her abusive partner before he had time to hurt her more. She has taken with her all of her belongings, including records, clothes, and photos of her son, which made her feel sad. She left without looking back and drove away in a car that smelled like old cigarettes and pine. The singer sees some drawings in her bag that she drew when they were together, and he feels a twinge of sadness as he remembers their time together. He doesn't want to talk about it and pleads with her to forget about him.

In the second half of the song, the singer and the woman have gotten back inside, and he is ready to hide because he doesn't know who might be around. He notices that she looks scared and tells her that their secret is safe with him. He pleads with her not to tell anyone and to forget about what happened between them. The song ends on a melancholy note with the repeated refrain, "Let's just not talk about it... Let's just forget all about it."

Extremely underrated album. Every track is brilliant.

@iannelli2448

It's his best album. The ST and E/O are unbelievable, don't get me wrong, but there's something special about Roman Candle.

@concars1234

@@iannelli2448 there's something "something" these songs have that all the rest of his mighty discog doesn't have

@barrypower2331

So raw hope this isn't his childhood, love the way he humanise's the the woman with tales of her picture's and boots rather than the abuse

@TheHarrisontemple

He wrote this stuff at like 16 or 17 so ide say it seems like his childhood

@andrewwabik5125

This is definitely from experience. Awful. But the song is gorgeous.

@rocker99908

I think it's pictures of her boy who really made her sad as well as she did wear cowboy boots, that's your thing

@Iznessmaurer

@@rocker99908 I hear those lyrics too, and it make at least logical sense that she, his mother, wore “cowboy boots” and that it was her “thing” as he refers to pictures she drew “like this one here/ her alone nobody near.” Thanks Rocker99908 as I always thought it as the stepdad who wore the “cowboy boots.” Could be male nonetheless due to poetic license and/or the blur of two abusive main caregivers as trauma is highly confusing, and it’s a song that looks back several years. Though it’s ambiguity at its best and Elliott talked directly about ambiguity being a great facet of his music and lyrics as he said it was more true to how people really are, that is, that people possess a great ambiguity which is often not spoken to at least in more poppy songs.
