No Name No. 5
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got bitten fingernails
And a head full of the past
And everybody's gone at last
Sweet, sweet smile
That's fading fast
'Cause everybody's gone at last

Don't get upset about it
No, not anymore
There's nothing wrong
That wasn't wrong before

Had a second alone
With a chance let pass
And everybody's gone at last

Well, I hope you're not waiting
Waitin' 'round for me
'Cause I'm not going anywhere
Obviously

Got a broken heart
And your name on my cast

And everybody's gone at last
Everybody's gone at last

Overall Meaning

Elliott Smith's "No Name No. 5" is a somber reflection on the past, love, and loss. The opening lyrics set the tone for the rest of the song, as Smith sings about his fingernails that he's bitten down to the quick and his head that is filled with the past. He then talks about how everybody has gone, and all that remains is a sweet smile that is fading fast. The repetition of the line "everybody's gone at last" adds to the melancholic mood of the song. Despite the sadness, Smith seems to find acceptance in the fact that there's nothing wrong now that wasn't wrong before. He has had second chances, but they've passed him by, and everyone has moved on. The chorus speaks of a broken heart and a name on a cast, suggesting that we often hold onto the memories of those we've lost even when they're long gone.

Overall, "No Name No. 5" is a bittersweet ode to life's regrets and losses. Smith's quiet, introspective vocals are perfectly complemented by the spare, plaintive guitar melody. The song is a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life and love, and how we must learn to accept and move on from our pain.

+Bernardo Parra its a great song to listen to when you feel like your life has hit a complete dead end, your in a rut you can't get out of and there's nothing you can do, its kind of a miserable place to be in but i guess listening to the song makes you feel like well as long as i'm here i might as well make the best of it and smile cause someone made a beautiful song to express exactly how i feel about it, i listen to this song whenever i feel like i hit the bottom most point of my life or my week and i actually just kind of smile and feel good about it in a way, its like wow my life feels this fucked up right now but shit i'm still fucking here, im still breathing and all i gotta do is wait for the weekend so i can get a little escape from it.. i dunno it's hard to express exactly what this song does for me, its kind of a theme song for self pity in a way, but you know.. sometimes you just gotta feel sorry for yourself every once in a while if no one else can feel it for you.

my second favorite line is "dont get upset about it, no not anymore, there's nothing wrong that wasn't wrong before"

and my first favorite is "hope your not waiting, waiting around for me, because i'm not going anywhere, obviously"

it's like the biggest, sweetest, most gentle fuck you to the world and everything that got you into the fucked up situation your in, i feel so good when that line comes in, even if it's a miserable description of myself, it's fucking true and sometimes you just gotta say it and admit it just to remind yourself of exactly who and where you are.. i feel like it's easier to recover from it when you can just be honest about it instead of pretending like you don't feel that way

A track on Either/Or that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. The lyrics are absolutely gut wrenching

@Missjunebugfreak

I agree. It's in my top 3 on Either/Or. I love how moody it sounds.

@thomascraymer8712

The best on the album imo

@31musicrider

For me, one of those unintentionally neglected tracks that I've rediscovered and has become one of my favorites
