Seen How Things Are Hard
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I took you to the train
Stupid shit you just play
I took the pictures in my head
You look like a skeleton a little dressy thing

You just didn't care
You're all getting drunk instead
Seen how things are hard
Seen how things are hard

I love you though
Seen how things are hard
Seen how things are hard
Well don't you know

The state of what you've got
It's a dizzy hot and just damn forgot
Stay well away from trouble that you caused
Using all your strength to keep the world at an arm's length

And I get upset that something was lost
Seen how things are hard
Seen how things are hard
I love you though

Seen how things are hard
Seen how things are hard
Well don't you know
I'm a glad reflection of you

I can't make corrections for you
You have to help to patch things up
Seen how things are hard
Seen how things are hard

I love you though
Seen how things are hard
Seen how things are hard
Well don't you know seen how things are hard

Seen how things are hard
I love you though
Seen how things are hard
Seen how things are hard

Well don't you know
No

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Seen How Things Are Hard" by Elliott Smith are complex and open to interpretation. The song seems to be about a difficult relationship, possibly with a partner or a friend. In the first verse, Smith describes taking someone to the train and feeling frustrated with their behavior, as they engage in "stupid shit". He also notes that they look thin and dressed up, perhaps suggesting they are trying to hide their struggles. The chorus, "Seen how things are hard", reflects on the difficulties of life and relationships, while also expressing a sense of love and loyalty.

In the second verse, Smith describes his own frustration with the situation, but also acknowledges that he is a reflection of the other person. He notes that he cannot fix things for them, but they need to help themselves. The final chorus repeats the earlier themes, emphasizing the challenges of life and relationships, while also acknowledging the presence of love and support.

Overall, "Seen How Things Are Hard" is a thoughtful reflection on the complexities of relationships and the difficulties of life, blending themes of frustration, love, and the need for personal responsibility.

The thumbs down, much like Facebook's once-ubiquitous "Like" button, (back before the subtle...nuance...of emoji were thrown into their quick reply tool bag) can be used as a tool with intended function nowhere close to describing their dislike the song. Once upon a time in Facebook, if you wanted attention for paying attention to the post your friend published to their wall for some attention, but didn't want to get into a whole thing by commenting, you leave a like. Easy peasy, "all done now clapping hands clean" move. Problem was you left a like for the new job, a like for relationship status: in a relationship. Also a like for grandma dying. Big fat thumbs up with a notification; "so and so liked your post!" Divorcing after 27 years together; say it with me: leave a like 👍. The point is like didn't mean "I like what's happening here." It came to be understood to mean "I acknowledge you and the subject matter of the posting you recently completed.
"You are not alone."

YouTube loves the autoplay videos, and they assess from powerful metrics which videos to play next and which they oughta nought sought out at all. If you'd rather not have this song in your autoplay mix, as perhaps it popped up when someone was listening to a different artist, and they wanted it all one band, so they give the Elliott Smith songs a thumbs down, to avoid their reappearance during a binge of another musician.

P'raps they'd been listening nonstop for a few years now, but things have been looking up, and while they will always have extra space in their hearts for Elliott and his music, they are actively trying to insert more positive choices into their commute mix. The YouTube app spent 2 years learning to play all things Elliott, now it needs a poke to move in the right direction for these mid-life mini mood modifiers and maximizers (derp.)

In summary; There are countless reasons to exercise greater personal control within YouTube. One of the tools to do it is the dislike button...

Or it doesn't

John Smith same here! I ride greyhounds each summer on my way to and from New York (on the way to Jersey)

Had a very similar experience, taking a greyhound from SW Florida to Philadelphia after a long relationship abruptly ended. ES was all I listened to on that journey.
It’s funny how certain songs can transport you back in time

The Christmas bells sends the song to a whole other level!

my favorite Elliot Smith song. Not a draggy mopey tune (not that there's anything wrong with those- they sure are satisfying at the right times) it is beautifully constructed melodically with a fantastically addictive climax in it's chorus and lyrically it is direct, emotional, seemingly heartfelt, empathic and ultimately hopeful. What is not to love?

Here it is, Thanksgiving night, sitting in a coffee shop killing time and taking breaks from reading by listening to some ES to get that overall better sense of well-being. Listening to ES works better than anything - I honestly can't think of anything else besides Elliott's music that I am grateful for in 2019 - not having come across him until last June.
It might only be one thing to be grateful for, but it's a BIG one that easily takes the place of 99 small and crappy, insincere kind of things to be grateful for.

who are you?

There is a lot to be grateful for... you have food in your belly, access to internet, clean drinking water, shelter, etc. Please don't use great music to espouse melodramatic grief upon the rest of us.

How can anyone give this a thumbs down!?! On a trip, i played this song on repeat for over an hour. It was hard to stop. I was hurting and this song takes the pain away, because someone gets me. People are dumb :(
