Untitled
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The gentleman's in the lane
Spinning his hat on a cane
Stepping out, out for change
Good morning all, it's a beautiful day

The generals are winning a war
Seemed suicidal before
You came alone, now
I'll protect you, long as you stay

L.A.
Morning had to come
You'll be walking in the sun
Living in the day
But last night I was about to throw it all away

If patience started a band
I'd be her biggest fan
Look at me, I'm talking to you

I don't want the lead in your play

The star's just a part of the scene
The gentleman in green
Paying off, out on the street
I can't go home, it's not on my way

L.A.
Things are never done
Car's parked in the sun
Living in the day
But last night I was about to throw it all away
Last night I was about to throw it all away

Last night I was about to throw it all away
Last night I was about to throw it all away

Overall Meaning

The song Untitled by Elliott Smith is a melancholic reflection on life and the choices we make. The lyrics are based on a series of observations of people going about their day in Los Angeles, and the contrast between their seemingly carefree lives and the complex emotions that the singer is feeling. The opening lines describe a gentleman spinning his hat on a cane, an image that suggests a certain attitude of nonchalance and whimsy. Meanwhile, the generals are winning a war, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for the struggles we all face in life.

The singer seems to be grappling with feelings of despair and hopelessness, as evidenced by the line "last night I was about to throw it all away." However, there is also a note of optimism in the song, as the singer resolves to protect someone as long as they stay. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the importance of human connection and the support that we can offer each other in difficult times.

Overall, Untitled is a poignant and introspective song that explores some of life's most fundamental questions. It captures the paradox of living in a world that can be both beautiful and cruel, and the ways in which we try to navigate these contradictions.

Lyrics:

We arrived too late
Our mouths were opening
I turned off the light
So, come on, night

You're a witness, you
You've seen me interrupt
A good, old-fashioned fight
So, come on, night

Everyone is gone
Home to oblivion
Home to oblivion
Home to oblivion

Watched the dying day
Blushing in the sky
Everyone is uptight
So, come on, night

Everyone is gone
Home to oblivion
Home to oblivion
Home to oblivion
Home to oblivion

I know we're not
Illegitimate
In our hearing
So, come on
So, come on, night...

@psychogirly910

The scene in Good Will Hunting where we hear this song is one of my favourite scenes.
And, in fact it’s quite simple. They share a good laugh over the apples guy, and then, they just drive around, not saying a word. Morgan and Bill’s eyes towards the sky through the window.
But it just feels so real. Being in a car with your best friends, just driving around, has something so peaceful to it ^^

@douglasbrunner7523

Right on.

@Sprtschk

Elliott is like a character you don't see. In the backseat, not talking much, sharing the vibe.
