Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You get what you see
I saw a rich fuck giving charity
Saw an evil emperor
Wearing my clothes

They're far from the best
But they might suit you better than the rest
Just looking in the mirror
Will make you a brave man

I know my place
Hate my face
I know how I begin
And how I'll end
Strung out again

Was a parliament of owls
Fly over a city of canals
Floating on the body
Floating in the Dalles

You get what you see
But some things they just change invisibly
I don't know where I'm going
And I don't even want to know

They're far from the best
But they might suit you better than the rest
Just looking in the mirror
Will make you a brave man

Standing, smiling
On some fantasy island
Looking at my lost reflection again
But a tide's coming in

And I'm strung out again
Strung out again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elliott Smith’s song “Strung Out Again” entail the struggles of dealing with self-image and acceptance. The opening line of the chorus, “You get what you see,” conveys an essence of vulnerability where the persona understands that the only image being portrayed is what is visible to the public, and the image is not always the true self. The following lines describe two contrasts of individuals, a wealthy philanthropist and an oppressive ruler who wear masks, which can be interpreted as the persona's experiences of contrasting himself with two different identities. Elliott Smith presents the idea that people are merely perceived for how they appear on the outside, but are not truly known for who they are.

Nevertheless, the following line, “just looking in the mirror will make you a brave man,” suggests that self-reflection is significant to the persona’s understanding of their identity. However, the idea of having to face oneself through the mirror is seen as a daunting task, further emphasized by the line, “Hate my face.” The mention of parliament of owls soaring over a city of canals is a subtle approach that adds to the dark theme of the song. It can be interpreted as a metaphor of a lost and wandering soul without a permanent home, searching for refuge. Ultimately, the song ends with the persona recognizing the cycle of addiction in his life, despite his efforts to break free from it.

This is my favorite Elliott record, and this is one of the songs where the full on Beatles-White-Album noisy-guitar rock-band sound he was attempting to combine with his typically delicate acoustic songwriting really had a chance to flourish. Some of the tracks didn't have time to be layered all the way before his death, but on this one...god those surging guitars wailing illogically around a seemingly calm voice singing out "waving at my lost reflection again/tide's coming in/and I'm strung out again"...it's a real musical moment. One to come back to, if you have the strength.

@Rick Griego Thanks, brother. And yes, even at his lowest, he was always absolutely PUMPING out brilliant stuff...which is nuts, cos I've been where he was, and I could barely move around, let alone write on a guitar. Although perhaps he had the cash to never be dope sick, etc, but even so...it takes a very certain type of constitution to still be able to produce like he did. I'm never quite sure which is my 2nd favorite (After "Basement"), I go back and forth...I think I might be inclined to go with Either/Or as well, although there's a lot of my favorite individual songs on "XO" (even if the record overall is overproduced), and the self-titled record, while the complete track listing is uneven, has, to me, some of his strongest individual songs as well ("Coming up Roses", "St. Ideas Heaven", of course "Needle", when you haven't played it to death)

Rick Griego

Exactly.Your point for point.couldn't have said it better friend.his Beatles influence at it's full might, but a total reinvention In a Basement is my favorite second ONLY to Either/Or,but the direction he was going..astonishing..and as fucked up as he was getting, or whether he could execute the sons live anymore or not, this guy was absolutely driven, just COMPELLED, to keep making Art.of course he knew time was running out.. I think he even told Joann Baughm no matter what, make sure this is released or something. Shit,he was a Beatle. He was and still is THE BEST..

@Hurricane Jones He was my favorite Beatle!

@Sara Barrett That's awesome that you got to see early performances of these songs...I would've loved that. In terms of his goal with the sonics of the album...I'm not saying you're wrong, but just that everything I have read has referred in some way to him trying to bring in a lot of noise, distortion, imperfection...from the detuning of guitars [heard most obviously on "Coast"], to working with McConnell, to his insistence that Rob Schnapf NOT touch the record...although he eventually did mix it...I always had the impression he was bringing in some beautiful chaos. Don't get me wrong, I love me some earlier, hushed Elliott, but...this is my fav record of his. And it's because of that combo

Sara Barrett

I saw him debut these songs at a KCRW event and that was about 2-3 years before the album was released and I get the sweet voice of George Harrison influence but he covered so many John Lennon songs. I don;t like the final mix of this song. Strung out again was a sad song that when he played it (acoustic and solo) along with all of the other songs on his last incomplete album, I think he was trying to be quiet and chill and himself. Quiet, empathetic and helpful. I saw the pictures he wanted to put on his last album. I don;t know what it was called a the time, but they were of the ones Autumn de Wilde took of him with black tape on his face, over his eyebrows, on his lip... just having fun in a bucket hat. As far as Elliott's favorite Beatle, I feel it was John Lennon and I know he loved School House Rock!

"What is a poet? An unhappy man who in his heart harbors a deep anguish, but whose lips are so fashioned that the moans and cries which pass over them are transformed into ravishing music....And men crowd about the poet and say to him, 'Sing for us soon again'--which is as much to say, 'May new sufferings torment your soul, but may your lips be fashioned as before; for the cries would only distress us, but the music, the music, is delightful.' And the critics come forward and say, 'That is perfectly done--just as it should be, according to the rules of aesthetics....' I tell you, I would rather be a swineherd, understood by the swine, than a poet misunderstood by men."

What a beautiful track! Those distorted, dissonant guitar lines really get to me. I can feel the pain through the music alone...but when coupled with those lyrics, it just guts me. This guy was a real genius; the greatest songwriter of my generation, IMHO
