02 Candle In The Wind 1997
Elton John Lyrics

Goodbye England's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend ever will

Loveliness we've lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch we'll always carry
For our nation's golden child
And even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candle's burned our long before
Your legend ever will

Goodbye England's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
Goodbye England's rose
From a country lost without your soul
Who'll miss the wings of your compassion
More than you'll ever know

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills

Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend ever will

Bryn Paulson,

Elton John singing at the funeral of Princess Diana (1997) The song "Candle in the Wind" was originally written by Elton John as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe the movie star.

Later when Princess Diana tragically passed awsy Elton John rewrote the words of his famous song for her funeral. Two thousand people attended her funeral in person, and 2.5 Billion people watched on television around the world.

Elton John said this version of the song which he rewrote specially for Princess Diana he said he would never play the song live again and he hasn't.

The world has never seen anything quite like her Funeral. And her two sons Prince Andrew (age 15 at the time) & Prince Harry (age 12 at the time) walked behind her coffin the entire time it traveled.

Princess Diana was loved by many.

It's so sad that she died so young in such a horrible way. Elton John did a great job rewriting this as a tribute to her.

Princess Di could have been Queen of England. God Bless her. She missed her sons getting married and having families.

The original song was a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. Both she and Princess Diana were 36 years old upon their deaths.
