Come Down In Time
Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the quiet silent seconds I, I turned off the light switch
And I, I came down to meet you in the half light the moon left
While a, a cluster of night jars sang some songs out of tune
A mantle of bright light shone down from a room

Come down in time I still hear her say
So clear in my ear like it was today
Come down in time was the message she gave
Come down in time and I'll meet you half way

Well I don't know if I should have heard her as yet
But a, a true love like hers is a, a hard love to get
And I've, I've walked most all the way and I, I ain't heard her call
And I, I'm getting to thinking if she's coming at all

Come down in time I still hear her say
So clear in my ear like it was today
Come down in time was the message she gave
Come down in time and I'll meet you half way

There are women, women, and some hold you tight
While some leave you counting the stars in the night

Overall Meaning

"Come Down In Time" is a song by Elton John that appears on his second studio album, Tumbleweed Connection, released in 1970. This song is an introspective ballad about a man who is searching for his love. He turns off the light and comes down to meet her in the half-light. While he is on his way, birds sing some songs that are out of tune. He then realizes that he has walked most of the way, but he has not heard her call. He starts to think that maybe she is not coming at all.

The lyrics of the song convey a sense of longing and despair. The singer is in search of his love, but he is not sure if she is still waiting for him. The repeated line "Come down in time" is a heartfelt plea for his lover to come down and meet him halfway. The song’s melody, with its slow pace, gentle piano, and acoustic guitar, adds to the sense of melancholy and creates a dreamy, reflective atmosphere.

This album will always take me back to 1970 when Brother Elton led me thru the wilderness to find my voice. Brother Stewart delivered this album to me as a gift, knowing I needed music more than ever before.

As bittersweet as those days were I look back now and see rhis album was prophetic. It told my future. This song in particular. Thats why we love music. It reveals us to ourselves.

It seems there is a mindset forming lately to never look back. How foolish. We see more clearly where we've come from and how the road twisted, turned, narrowed and stopped. We then can make more sure plans for where we believe we're going. It also reminds us that we don't always end up where we believe we're going.

Don't ever be afraid to look back. A 360 degree perspective is complete whereas 180 is only half of the big picture.

I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this song is a secret masterpiece. Bernie's lyrics, Elton's vocals, and -- especially -- Paul Buckmaster's arrangement all come together in such a magical way.

The bass work and clarinet (I think) are the icing on this very perfect cake.

The chills and memories of days gone by are endless when i listen to this song. I blinked and I was in my 60's. Wow where did life go. I am so happy I was part of the music culture of those times. Wow I sit back and close my eyes with this Beautiful song playing and I am back in time enjoying my youth, memories of past Loves, friends and family that are no longer here and this great music. As they say the moment is fleeting but I am so thankful I have songs like this to bring me back to a great time in my youth and my life.

Wow! I am 63 and I agree with all your sentiments because I feel the same. I remember being in high school and my brother-in-law and sister lived on the 3rd floor. Sometimes I would go in their music room and listen to all their albums and “Tumbleweed Connection” was one of them. I so liked this early music! God bless you and rest the souls of your loved ones and use you as His instrument as you write this next chapter of your life. Bloom where you are planted my friend🎹🎶🥰
