Rocketman
Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She packed my bags last night pre-flight
Zero hour, nine AM
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much, I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time

And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time

Overall Meaning

The Elton John classic "Rocketman" is a song about an astronaut who is preparing to leave Earth on a long space flight. He is excited about what he is about to do, but also sad to be leaving his life behind. As he sits in his spaceship waiting for launch, he reflects on the loneliness of space travel and how much he misses his wife and life on Earth. He sees himself as a "rocket man," someone who is isolated and vulnerable in his spacecraft, flying through the void of space. The song is a moving portrait of the human condition, exploring themes of isolation, longing, and despair.

The song was released in 1972 and has become one of Elton John's most beloved hits. It was inspired by both the science fiction films of the time and the early space travel experiments of the NASA space program. The song's haunting melody and powerful lyrics have resonated with generations of listeners, making it a true classic of the rock genre.

while going through radiation at the hospital for cancer treatment , they always ask what playlist i want to listen to. my go to is always either an elton john playlist or a queen playlist. but i remember on my last radiation appointment i chose elton and i was listening to this song as i finished. i had been feeling so distant because i couldn’t do much cause how sick i was, but this song brought me so much happiness. and in that moment, for some reason i knew that i’d get through it and be alright in the end. and here i am still alive to this day fighting cancer for the 7th time and i will never give up. don’t care if it takes a long long time , i’ll be okay :).
