Roy Rogers
Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes you dream, sometimes it seems
There's nothing there at all
You just seem older than yesterday
And you're waiting for tomorrow to call

You draw to the curtains and one thing's for certain
You're cozy in your little room
The carpet's all paid for, God bless the TV
Let's go shoot a hole in the moon

Oh, and Roy Rogers is riding tonight
Returning to our silver screens
Comic book characters never grow old
Evergreen heroes whose stories were told
Oh the great sequin cowboy who sings of the plains
Of roundups and rustlers and home on the range
Turn on the TV, shut out the lights
Roy Rogers is riding tonight

Nine o'clock mornings, five o'clock evenings
I'd liven the pace if I could
Oh I'd rather have a ham in my sandwich than cheese
But complaining wouldn't do any good

Lay back in my armchair, close eyes and think clear
I can hear hoof beats ahead
Roy and Trigger have just hit the hilltop
While the wife and the kids are in bed

Oh, and Roy Rogers is riding tonight
Returning to our silver screens
Comic book characters never grow old
Evergreen heroes whose stories were told
Oh the great sequin cowboy who sings of the plains
Of roundups and rustlers and home on the range

Turn on the TV, shut out the lights
Roy Rogers is riding tonight

Overall Meaning

The song "Roy Rogers" by Elton John is a nostalgic ode to the legendary cowboy and western movies of the past. The lyrics talk about the monotony of daily life and the escape and comfort found in the stories of Roy Rogers and other cowboy heroes. The song opens with a reflection on the passage of time; sometimes life seems empty, and we wait for tomorrow to bring something new. But in the safety of our own homes, where everything is familiar, we find peace in watching Roy Rogers ride again on our TV screens.

The song creates a clear contrast between the mundane reality of the singer's life and the fantasy world of Roy Rogers. The singer longs for excitement and adventure but cannot find it in his routine. The only thing that can transport him from his mundane life is the heroism and bravery of the cowboy legend Roy Rogers. The song mentions the iconic details of the cowboy's life, such as his horse Trigger and his sequined outfits. For the singer, Rogers is not just a fictional character but a symbol of hope and inspiration that the world needs.

Overall, "Roy Rogers" is a tribute to the power of storytelling and the comfort that we find in nostalgic icons. It is a reminder that even the most ordinary life can be enhanced and made richer through the power of imagination and a good story.

I was 17 when GYBR was released in October 1973. I bought a copy at Licorice Pizza here in CA the day it was released. Went direct from my fast food job at Naugles that evening with a co-worker, both of us still in our uniforms, smelling like burgers and tacos, and paid about $6.00 for it on vinyl. I still have it, and I think it's his best album, and 'Roy Rogers' one of the best tracks.
