Written In The Stars
Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am here to tell you we can never meet again
Simple really, isn't it, a word or two and then?
A lifetime of not knowing where or how or why or when
You think of me or speak of me or wonder what befell
The someone you once loved, so long ago, so well

Never wonder what I'll feel as living shuffles by
You don't have to ask me and I need not reply
Every moment of my life from now until I die
I will think or dream of you and fail to understand
How a perfect love can be confounded out of hand

Is it written in the stars, are we paying for some crime?
Is that all that we are good for, just a stretch of mortal time?
Is this God's experiment in which we had no say?
In which we're given paradise but only for a day?

Nothing can be altered, oh, there is nothing to decide
No escape, no change of heart, nor any place to hide
You are all I'll ever want, but this I am denied
Sometimes in my darkest thoughts, I wish I'd never learned
What it is to be in love and have that love returned

Is it written in the stars, are we paying for some crime?
Is that all that we are good for, just a stretch of mortal time?
Is this God's experiment in which we had no say?
In which we're given paradise but only for a day?

(Is it written in the stars, are we paying for some crime?)
(Is that all that we are good for, just a stretch of mortal time?)

Is this God's experiment in which we have no say?
In which we're given paradise but only for a day?

Overall Meaning

“Written in the Stars”, by Elton John, is a song lamenting a love that was never meant to be. The lyrics capture the pain of a love that was perfect but ultimately doomed. The first verse expresses the sadness of two lovers who have gone their separate ways, and are unlikely ever to meet again. The singer describes the lifetime of uncertainty that comes with such a split, where they will never know how, why or where their former lover has gone.

The singer holds onto the memories of the past, knowing that the love they had was real, even though it ended. The second verse speaks of the singer’s understanding that their love was perfect, but that it somehow confounded out of hand. They are left with the unanswered question, “Is it written in the stars, are we paying for some crime?” The singer also speaks to the fleeting nature of life, where love can be given for only a day.

The final verse talks of the acceptance of their fate, where the mistakes have been made, and there is no way to fix them. The singer recognizes that they will never have what they truly want, and that the pain of knowing what could have been is the most difficult thing to overcome. “Written in the Stars” speaks to those who can never forget the love they lost, and who still wonder what might have been.

This is one of those Elton Jonn's songs that is very much underappreciated yet it is a very beaitiful duet with very talented LeeAnn Rimes.

LeAnn low key outshines Elton in this masterpiece

I absolutely agree Thomas. It's an absolute beautiful song, the musical notes & both of their harmonies. When I seen only 1.9M have liked this, it was shocking really! He is absolutely 1 of my all time favorites that I was lucky enough to see in 2013. While his band went on break 1/2 way through for 1/2 an hr, Elton continued solo on the piano doing his great hits. Over 3 hours of entertainment! 1 of the best concerts I've ever been to. It was almost sold out. We paid just under $700 for 2 nosebleed section tickets, but looked almost straight down on him. After We purchased, he added more dates, including 1 in my City. Lol

He's never written a bad song. EVER!!!

I agree 1000%

@@stevensimon6275 There is no outshining. Each adds something unique to the song. Amazing and vital for 2 different reasons. Y'know... the whole purpose of a duet.

This song has more meaning than anyone realizes, I've loved this song when I first heard it. And with Elton and Leann singing together it can really hit home.

This is a beautiful song...of a love that was not meant to be..just because you are not together, doesn't mean the love has gone away..sometimes you think of them all the time, other times it comes in waves, with songs like this its like time has stopped and your back together in that moment of time..and all you remember is the love you felt. Funny how time goes by, the memories or that sting in your heart, and the tears don't fade... Just make it more manageable with time ♥. sometimes..♥

One of the most underrated ballads of Sir Elton...
