I Saw Her Standing There
Elton John & John Lennon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She was just seventeen
And you know what I mean
And the way she looked was way beyond compare
I couldn't dance with another
When I saw her standing there

Well she looked at me
And I could see
That before too long I fell in love with her
I couldn't dance with another
When I saw here standing there

Well my heart went boom
As I crossed that room
And I held her hand in mine

Oh we danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long I feel in love with her

I couldn't dance with another
When I saw here standing there

Overall Meaning

The singer sees a 17-year-old girl and is struck by her beauty, declaring that the way she looked was “way beyond compare.” His attraction to her is so strong that he couldn't dance with anyone else when he saw her standing there. When she looks at him, he falls in love with her, and they spend the night dancing and holding each other tight.

The song captures the excitement of young love, the rush of emotions that come with meeting someone new and feeling a connection instantly. The lyrics suggest that the singer is swept away by this girl's beauty and charm, and his heart literally goes “boom” as he crosses the room to dance with her. The repetition of the line “I couldn't dance with another when I saw her standing there” emphasizes the power of this connection and the singer's overwhelming desire to be with this girl.

A scorcher! Rusty as he was live, Lennon still belts this out. The reason for his appearance was that Elton bet him that Whatever Gets You Through The Night would be a number one in the US. Lennon didn't think it would be, and this was the forfeit - to appear live on stage with Elton. Well done Elton, you ought to have had a few more bets with Lennon ..... a fantastic night, shame there were only three numbers - I bet the crowd wished they would have gone on for another two hours .....

I was one of the lucky ones. My first concert, at the age of 15. I thought they'd all be like that. Unbelievable.
Was at the right place at the right time. Kiki Dee opened, then a video "take me to the pilot" video, then Elton for Funeral for a Friend. John Lennon. Great time. Thanks for the memories.

I was lucky enough to be at this show. Sat in the first row of the blue seats right above the stage. This song, not I Wanna Hold Your Hand, is what got me hooked on the Beatles in '63. To hear John sing this song LIVE is still the greatest concert experience I've ever had. Miss you John!
