Early Mornin
Elvis Presley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the early mornin' rain
With a dollar in my hand
And an aching in my heart
And my pockets full of sand
I'm a long ways from home
And I missed my loved one so
In the early mornin' rain
With no place to go

Out on runway number nine
Big 707 set to go
Well, I'm out here on the grass
Where the pavement never grows
Where the liquor tasted good
And the women all were fast
There she goes my friend
She's rolling out at last

Hear the mighty engines roar (hear the mighty engines roar)
See the silver wing on high (see the silver wing on high)
She's away and westward bound
For above the clouds she flies
Where the mornin' rain don't fall
And the sun always shines
She'll be flying over my home
In about three hours time

This ol' airport's got me down
It's no earthly good to me
'Cause I'm stuck here on the ground
Cold and drunk as I might be
Can't jump a jet plane (can't jump a plane)
Like you can a freight train (like a freight train)
So I best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain
So I best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain

So I best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elvis Presley's Early Mornin' Rain tell the story of a man who finds himself stranded at an airport in the early morning hours, with a dollar in his hand, pockets full of sand, and an aching heart for his loved one he's far away from. He's watching a big 707 airplane take off from runway number nine, bearing witness to the mighty engines roaring and the silver wings soaring high above the clouds, flying westward, away from the morning rain and towards the perpetual sunshine. Meanwhile, the singer of the song is suffering from a terrible hangover, immobilized and unable to escape, feeling trapped on the ground while his thoughts wander towards the woman he left behind. He's painfully aware that he can't hop on a jet plane as easily as he could climb aboard a freight train, and therefore must resign himself to his fate and leave the airport with the early morning rain.

The song's melancholic lyrics and Elvis's sorrowful voice convey a profound sense of isolation and loss. Elvis manages to paint a vivid and genuine portrait of a man who feels the weight of the world on his shoulders, stranded in a place he doesn't want to be, yearning to be reunited with his loved one. While Elvis never wrote a word of this song, which was written by Gordon Lightfoot, he manages to imprint it with his soulful voice and bring the emotions that the song is trying to convey into a powerful focus. There's an evident poignancy that comes with hearing the king of rock and roll, a figure larger than life, singing with such vulnerability about such a relatable topic.

Early Morning Rain"

In the early morning rain
with a dollar in my hand
And an aching in my heart
and my pockets full of sand

I'm a long ways from home
and I miss my loved one so
In the early morning rain
with no place to go

Out on runway number nine
big 707 set to go
But I'm out here in the grass
where the cold wind blows (Elvis sings "where the pavement never grows!" 🕯️)
Where the liquor tasted good
and the women all were fast
And there she goes, my friend,
she's rolling down at last

Hear the mighty engines roar -
see the silver wing on high
She's away and westward bound -
far above the clouds she'll fly
Where the morning rain don't fall
and the sun always shines
She'll be flying o'er my home
in about three hours time

This old airport's got me down -
it's no earthly good to me...
'Cause I'm stuck here on the ground
cold and drunk as I might be
Can you jump a jet plane
like you can a freight train?
So, I'd best be on my way
in the early morning rain

So, I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain
So, I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain.
So, I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain

The first verse of this song hits home, I had to relocate 350 miles away from family because of a accident I had . This morning it's raining and I think I played this song 50 times...teary eyed!

@mindybelt6120

Hang in there, God Bless and Keep you! I love this song too, it touches my heart. You're not alone, ok? Just came across your post while listening to the song and just wanted to cheer you up!

@jerrythompson5967

@@mindybelt6120 Thank you for the kind words. But the loneliness is getting to me.

@mindybelt6120

I'm sorry. Back in 1991, I was in the hospital after giving birth and I was up there by myself and I just cried. Jesus is with you, and has been with me even though I didn't always know it.
