Early Morning Rain
Elvis Presley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the early mornin' rain
With a dollar in my hand
And an aching in my heart
And my -pockets full of sand
I'm a long ways from home
And I missed my loved one so
In the early mornin' rain
With no place to go
Out on runway number nine
Big 707 set to go
Well I'm out here on the grass
Where the pavement never grows
Where the liquor tasted good
And the women all were fast
There she goes my friend
She's rolling out at last
Hear the mighty engines roar
See the silver wing on high

She's away and westward bound
For above the clouds she flies
Where the mornin' rain don't fall
And the sun always shines
She'll be flying over my home
In about three hours time
This ol' airport's got me down
It's no earthly good to me
'Cause I'm stuck here on the ground
Cold and drunk as I might be
Can't jump a jet plane
Like you can a freight train
So I best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain
So I best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain

So I best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain

Overall Meaning

Elvis Presley's song Early Morning Rain tells the story of a man who is stranded at an airport, with no money or place to go, feeling lost and alone. He has an aching heart and pockets full of sand, symbolizing time slipping away and his desperation to find a way out of his situation. The man watches a plane take off, filled with envy and longing, dreaming of a life in the skies where the morning rain doesn't fall and the sun always shines. He wishes he could escape his current situation and follow his dreams, but knows he can't jump a jet plane like a freight train. In the end, he resigns himself to leaving the airport and heading out into the world, hoping to find a new path in life.

The lyrics of Early Morning Rain are poignant and reflective, capturing the feelings of a person who is lost and searching for meaning in their life. The mention of liquor and fast women, along with the desperation of the main character, give the song a melancholic tone that is both sad and compelling. The repetition of the phrase "In the early morning rain" emphasizes the feeling of isolation and longing that the character experiences.

Early Morning Rain"

In the early morning rain
with a dollar in my hand
And an aching in my heart
and my pockets full of sand

I'm a long ways from home
and I miss my loved one so
In the early morning rain
with no place to go

Out on runway number nine
big 707 set to go
But I'm out here in the grass
where the cold wind blows (Elvis sings "where the pavement never grows!" 🕯️)
Where the liquor tasted good
and the women all were fast
And there she goes, my friend,
she's rolling down at last

Hear the mighty engines roar -
see the silver wing on high
She's away and westward bound -
far above the clouds she'll fly
Where the morning rain don't fall
and the sun always shines
She'll be flying o'er my home
in about three hours time

This old airport's got me down -
it's no earthly good to me...
'Cause I'm stuck here on the ground
cold and drunk as I might be
Can you jump a jet plane
like you can a freight train?
So, I'd best be on my way
in the early morning rain

So, I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain
So, I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain.
So, I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain

The first verse of this song hits home, I had to relocate 350 miles away from family because of a accident I had . This morning it's raining and I think I played this song 50 times...teary eyed!

@mindybelt6120

Hang in there, God Bless and Keep you! I love this song too, it touches my heart. You're not alone, ok? Just came across your post while listening to the song and just wanted to cheer you up!

@jerrythompson5967

@@mindybelt6120 Thank you for the kind words. But the loneliness is getting to me.

@mindybelt6120

I'm sorry. Back in 1991, I was in the hospital after giving birth and I was up there by myself and I just cried. Jesus is with you, and has been with me even though I didn't always know it.
