Frankie & Johnny
Elvis Presley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little frankie went down to the barroom
She asked for a glass of beer she said, hey
Bartender has my johnny been here he's my man but
He's done me wrong the bartender said
Frankie you know I won't tell you no lie
He left here about a minute ago with a gal named
Alice fry he's your man but he's doing you wrong
Frankie was a good little woman surely everybody

Knows she paid one hundred dollars for johnny's
New suit of clothes she loved her man but
He done her wrong then frankie went down broadway
With a razor in her hand she said, stand back
All you women I'm looking for my cheating man
Yes, he's my man but he's done me wrong
It was on a Friday morning about a half past
Nine o'clock frankie pulled her .44 and fired

Three fatal shots she shot her man cause
He done her wrong why don't you run, frankie
They said, frankie why don't you run cause here comes
The chief of police with the .44 smokeless gun
You killed your man we know he done you wrong

Yeah, he done you wrong, frankie you
Should've shot him forty times I'm a witness, frankie

Overall Meaning

The classic song “Frankie and Johnny” tells the story of a woman named Frankie who goes in search of her cheating man, Johnny. The song is about betrayal and a woman’s fierce sense of pride and loyalty. It starts off by giving a glimpse into Frankie’s life, who is a good woman but has been done wrong by her man. She goes to the bar in search of Johnny and finds out from the bartender that he left with another woman named Alice.

Frankie, hurt and angry, goes to find Johnny and warns all the women to stand back with a razor in her hand. She confronts Johnny and eventually shoots him three times with a .44 because he has done her wrong. As she walks down the street with her gun in hand, the police finally catch up to her and tell her to run, but she refuses to go. The police officer admits, in the end, that Johnny got what he deserved, and Frankie should have shot him forty times.

The song is a tragic love ballad about a woman’s desire for loyalty and the lengths she will go to get it. The betrayal she feels at the hands of her lover leads her to commit a heinous crime, which ultimately lands her in prison. The lyrics reveal a woman’s emotional journey and the struggle that comes with unrequited love.

The song "Frankie and Johnny" has been performed by literally thousands of singers and acted out many many times. But this version has Donna Douglas, Nancy Kovack and Sue An Langdon. You aren't going to find a more gorgeous version of this song ever.

I love how he smiles when he's singing Frankie and Johnny. I love his outfit but there's a dark blue outfit that he really looks gorgeous in this movie.
