Hard Headed Woman -
Elvis Presley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, a hard headed woman
A soft hearted man
Been the cause of trouble
Ever since the world began

Oh yeah (oh yeah)
Ever since the world began
A hard headed woman
Been a thorn in the side of man

Adam told Eve
"Listen here to me
Don't you let me catch you
Messing 'round that apple tree"

Oh yeah (oh yeah)
Ever since the world began
A hard headed woman
Been a thorn in the side of man

Oh yeah (oh yeah)
Ever since the world began
A hard headed woman
Been a thorn in the side of man

Samson told Delilah
Loud and clear
"Keep your cotton picking fingers
Out my curly hair"

Oh yeah (oh yeah)
Ever since the world began
A hard headed woman
Been a thorn in the side of man

I heard about a king
Who was doing swell
'Til he started playing
With that evil Jezebel

Oh yeah (oh yeah)
Ever since the world began
A hard headed woman
Been a thorn in the side of man

I got a woman
A head like a rock
If she ever went away
I'd cry around the clock

Oh yeah (oh yeah)
Ever since the world began
A hard headed woman
Been a thorn in the side of man
A hard headed woman
Been a thorn in the side of man

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hard Headed Woman by Elvis Presley are a commentary on the dynamic between men and women. The song depicts the struggle between a hard-headed woman and a soft-hearted man who have been causing trouble ever since the world began. It suggests that women have been a thorn in the side of men, using examples from stories such as Adam and Eve and Samson and Delilah, to depict the historical tension between the sexes.

The song also has a personal element to it, as Elvis sings about his own experience with a woman who has a head like a rock. He remarks that if she ever left him, he would be devastated and cry around the clock. This suggests that while hard-headed women may cause trouble for men, they are also essential to their lives and they cannot imagine living without them.

Overall, the lyrics of Hard Headed Woman are a reflection on the complicated but necessary relationship between men and women, highlighting the tension and difficulties that arise from it.

You should get the album Elvis Number One singles. I'm 49 now and when I was 16 years old I found it in a $1 tape bin. Bought it and took it home and put it in my walkman. By the end of it I had tears streaming down my face. Been a huge Elvis fan ever since.
