Is It so Strange
Elvis Presley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, if you tell a lie
You know that I'll forgive you
Though you say our love is just a game
And when you hear my name
You'll say I'm from a strange world
But is it so strange to be in love with you

Is it so strange
That I love you more than all the world
Is it so strange
I have no eyes for any other girl

Oh won't you take me back
And say that you still love me
To waste a love like ours would be a sin
Let us kiss again
Let me hold you near

And take me from this strange world
That I'm living in

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elvis Presley's song “Is It So Strange” are about a man who is deeply in love with someone, despite the fact that the other person may not feel the same way. The lyrics portray the persona as someone who is willing to forgive anything, including the telling of lies, just to be with this person. Even though the other person may consider their love to be just a game, the persona argues that it's not strange to love someone so intensely.

As the song progresses, the persona begs to be taken back and to have their love reciprocated. They even suggest that it would be a sin not to be together, as they feel that their love is too powerful to ignore. They plea to be held near and to be taken out of this strange world they are living in. In general, the song depicts a love that is unrequited, yet the persona remains persistent in their desire to be with the other person.

This one he had written just for him by Faron Young. He must have loved it the first time he heard it. This song he first sang for June Juanico, and she had never heard him sing a ballad like that. It became 'their song' after singing it to her the Summer of 1956, he tries it out during the Million dollar Quartet recording for feed back in Dec 1956. He finally records it January 19, 1957 at Radio Recorders, Hollywood. It was RELEASED to the general public on AUG. 21, 1957.
Elvis Over nighted it to June Juanico in March 1957 The day he bought Graceland and was planning to surprise June with Graceland, ask her to move in and give her 'their album' titled 'Just for You' with this song on it. He had purposed to June in Summer of 1956 and sang her this song...

He bought Graceland to surprise June & to ask her to marry him and move in. In the summer of 1956 while he was in Biloxi in route along the coast in New Orleans they seen tons of Colonial homes lined the coast. He was in his pink Cadillac with Gladys and Vernon. Elvis promised "to buy her a Colonialism Mansion for all their kids, and Momma can help us raise them..." Gladys slapped him on the back of the head teasing him for falling so in love with June and giving her a hard time on the drive...
He had told his momma to start looking, they found it. He purchased it the first week of March 1957, He recorded an album with all their love songs. He had her meet him in New Orleans on the train, expecting her to board and they go to Memphis, he has secretly already proposed in July 1956. Her Mom had made a mistake and told the papers and the Colonel was trying to break them up 🤬. He kept Elvis busy and surrounded by Vegas show girls and Hollywood starlets. The papers were filled girls. Elvis' calls had started to get fewer and fewer but he thought June would wait anyhow! June gets on the train tells Elvis she "can't be waiting forever to be loved back. It's not fair to either of us, maybe in another life.
Another guy has been asking her out, and he was good to her & her Mom, and she wanted to give him a chance". She would eventually marry him, have 3 kids. Elvis busted out crying, begging her to not leave, that he had a huge surprise for her in Memphis. He only wanted her forever. And she said she cried and stepped off the train handing him a box of all his personal stuff from her house. Two days later she seen on the news Elvis Presley buys Mansion - Graceland!" and she realized then what the surprise. It was everything they had planned from the Colonial style, large columns, horse barn, white fence, horseshoe drive. 😔 later the record arrived postmarked the week prior and it was all their songs. All her life she kept up with hom a lifelong fan, and he secretly loved her back. 🥰

One that is often over looked because he was young (1955-1957)and it was prior to the Memphis Mafia - June Juanico. It was before fame, and into the year he became a star both musically & Movie Star! She was the love of his life too. Once you read her book, you find June's memory sprinkled throughout his life. She was the one that got away! She was who Elvis was trying to recreate with Priscilla. He bought Graceland FOR HER (Eventually his Mom cause June Left him), she started his spiritual book obsession & The Prophet by Khalil was given to him by her July of 1956... it was on his night stand the day he died in 1977. He bought other copies (by the case from the publisher) and gave them to friends but always kept her original, the picture of her & him together were in his office his whole life, they (June & Elvis) came up with the TCB 🤣 code for the Memphis mafia (Red, Gene & The guys) aka The Cherry Busters 🤭🤫, she died her hair black and he LOVED them matching with both blue eyes... sound familiar? Gladys loved her so much she told Elvis to marry her. He recorded songs he sang to her all through out his life. He checked on her through out their lives last time in 1977. She even met him at the movies in 1965, and all the guys knew exactly who she was - called her by name when they seen her in randomly in Memphis then invited her to the movies to suprise Elvis. Elvis and her picked names for their babies, Lisa Marie was for the girl they chose. Marie is a family name for June. She seen him in Vegas several times, the MM spotted her & would upgrade her seat to stage side. Once escorted back stage at the request of Elvis, He pulled her into a closet and told her he loved her more then he had ever loved anyone and thought of her his entire life. He asked if they made the right choices splitting up, and said he would take her if she just said the word... she told him she was married and had children and was happy. She said he told her 1956 was his most cherished time of his life and he quoted from the Prophet which is the title of her book. Those same verses he wrote in his Bible, Inside 'The Impersonal Life' (another book he gifted by the thousands) and on a small card in his wallet he carried his entire life.
I own a bunch of auction catalogs and I find pieces of June sprinkled on notebooks, in Journals with their numerology, even while he was with Priscilla & Linda. I am Happily married myself but I too look back at my first love with a full heart. To be young again!
Here is the verses he & she shared from The Prophet:
It was but yesterday we met in a dream.
You have sung to me in my aloneness,
and I of your longings have built a tower in the sky.
But now our sleep has fled and our dream is over,
and it is no longer dawn.
The noontide is upon us and our half-waking has turned to fuller day,
and we must part.
If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more,
we shall speak again together and
you shall sing to me a deeper song.
And if our hands should meet in another dream
we shall build another tower in the sky.
If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a deeper song.
And if our hands should meet in another dream, we shall build another tower in the sky.

Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

When you take this voice and add his looks and charisma, you just don't get that in any other package ever. He was a one and only. No one can surpass in any aspect of his life. I wished he could know how much he is still loved and appreciated.

One of Elvis´s most underrated songs. Strange that it wasn´t a big hit. A favorite of mine.
