Little Sister
Elvis Presley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little sister, don't you
Little sister, don't you
Little sister, don't you kiss me once or twice
And say it's very nice and then you run
Little sister, don't you do what your big sister done

Well, I dated your big sister
And I took her to a show
I went for some candy along came Jim Dandy
And they snuck right out of the door

Little sister, don't you
Little sister, don't you
Little sister, don't you kiss me once or twice
And say it's very nice and then you run
Little sister, don't you do what your big sister done

Every time I see your sister
Well, she's got somebody new
She's mean and she's evil like that little old boll weevil
Guess I'll try my luck with you

Little sister, don't you
Little sister, don't you
Little sister, don't you kiss me once or twice
And say it's very nice and then you run
Little sister, don't you do what your big sister done

Well, I used to pull your pigtails
And pinch your turned-up nose
But you been a growin' and, baby, it's been showin'
From your head down to your toes

Little sister, don't you
Little sister, don't you
Little sister, don't you kiss me once or twice
And say it's very nice and then you run
Little sister, don't you do what your big sister done

Little sister, don't you do what your big sister done
Little sister, don't you do what your big sister done

Overall Meaning

In Elvis Presley's song "Little Sister", he warns his lover's younger sister not to follow in her older sister's footsteps. Elvis begins by telling the little sister not to kiss him and run away as her older sister has presumably done before. He goes on to say he dated the older sister and took her to a show, only to be abandoned when "Jim Dandy" came along. Elvis then compares the older sister to a "boll weevil" and says he's done trying with her. He then turns his attention to the little sister and warns her not to mimic her older sister's actions, despite the fact that he used to tease her and now finds her attractive.

The song seems to be about Elvis's desire for the little sister, while also warning her not to make the same mistakes her older sister did. The lyrics suggest a sense of frustration with the older sister's behavior and a hope for something different with the little sister. The song can also be interpreted as a warning to the younger generation to learn from the mistakes of those who came before them and to forge their own path.
