Suspicion
Elvis Presley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every time you kiss me, I'm still not certain that you love me
Every time you hold me, I'm still not certain that you care
Though you keep on saying you really, really, really love me
Do you speak the same words to someone else when I'm not there

Suspicion torments my heart
Suspicion keeps us apart
Suspicion why torture me

Every time you call me and tell me we should meet tomorrow
I can't help but think that you're meeting someone else tonight
Why should our romance just keep on causing me such sorrow
Why am I so doubtful whenever you are out of sight

Suspicion torments my heart
Suspicion keeps us apart
Suspicion why torture me

Darling, if you love me, I beg you wait a little longer
Wait until I drive all these foolish fears out of my mind
How I hope and pray that our love will keep on growing stronger
Maybe I'm suspicious 'cause true love is so hard to find

Suspicion torments my heart

Suspicion keeps us apart
Suspicion why torture me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elvis Presley’s song, “Suspicion”, describe the torment and uncertainty that the singer is experiencing in his relationship. Despite repeated affirmations of love from his partner, the singer is wracked with suspicion and doubts. He wonders whether his partner says the same words to someone else when they are not together and fears that he is being betrayed. He also can’t shake off the feeling that he is being replaced by someone else whenever his partner suggests that they meet another time. Despite the plea of his partner to wait a little longer and trust the love that they have, the singer remains plagued by suspicious emotions.

The lyrics of “Suspicion” reflect the pain of insecurity that can arise from a lack of trust in a relationship. The singer's inability to fully trust his partner keeps him from experiencing the fullness of love and affection in their relationship. He lives in constant fear of being betrayed, replaced, or abandoned by his partner. The repeated refrain of “suspicion why torture me” underscores the emotional torment he is going through as he struggles with his doubts and fears. In the end, the singer realizes the foolishness of his fears and hopes that their love will keep on growing stronger.

This is one of Elvis's more underrated songs but it is one of my favorites. I love the catchy rhythm.

Thank you for liking my comment.

@Debbie Brett. You're very welcome! Elvis was the original singer of this song and the best. Way better than Stafford's version.

@mitchrobbinson1219

But it's Terry staffords song

@debbiebrett6689

@Mitch Robbinson I gather Terry Stafford composed it.

@mitchrobbinson1219

@Debbie Brett Terry Stafford wrote and sang it originally, Elvis dubbed over songs like last kiss, suspicion, moody river ect.

It wasn’t by Elvis he covered this song
The original was by Terry Stafferd

@MrRockabilly70

@Lynn Cantrell You are wrong! This song is a Doc Pomus - Mort Shuman composition written specifically for Elvis and was released on the "Pot Luck" album in May 1962. The Terry Stafford cover version was released in February 1964.
