Sailing In The Dark Isn't Smart Kid!
Emarosa Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It feels so pointless is anyone there?
Where is your faith that keeps you moving?

Who decides how far we go
Who walks behind us in case we trip over the smallest crack.

Am I unworthy,
These things can only be said so many times before they become our fears
I find myself swimming farther than I ever planned to go out in this lost ocean
Perfection will never over power us.

Don't hide from the light they can't burn bright forever.

I find myself swimming farther than I ever planned to go out in this lost ocean
I still feel hate reaching out to save me its deep down OH but it's there.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Emarosa's song, "Sailing In The Dark Isn't Smart Kid!" reflect the feelings of uncertainty and doubt that arise in one's mind during a difficult phase of life. The opening lines are an expression of hopelessness and disillusionment, where the singer wonders if anyone is out there to listen to his plight. He questions the value of faith that is supposed to drive you towards progress, but seems to have faltered in his case. The allusion to the ambiguity of the situation is clear in the lines, "Who decides how far we go / Who walks behind us in case we trip over the smallest crack" which highlights that we are often unsure of the factors that govern our life's journey.

The subsequent lines echo the fear of inadequacy and self-doubt that often cloud our judgement when we face challenges in life. The singer grapples with feelings of unworthiness, and the possibility that these fears might take root and hold us back. The metaphor of swimming in a lost ocean, where the shore is out of sight, paints a picture of the unknown, and the need to keep pushing on despite the lack of direction. The final lines offer a glimmer of hope, as the singer acknowledges that though hate may lurk in the depths, a way out is still possible if we don't hide from the light.

I did an essay and i referenced this song to a part of my life. The way i did it was that Jonny Craig was talking about "perfection" deciding our lives and "watching over us". Being that Jonny was atheist i think that he is saying that religion plays a major important role and in his case it held him back. So now he's "swimming in this lost ocean" to seek out the directionless lives that we live without the influence of religion. Just my interpretation =)

In the documentary Johnny actually said that he just makes up his lyrics on the spot and they don't really mean anything. Like he was just drunk and saying stuff that sounded cool. I was bummed to hear that
