Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

Human
Emeli Sandé Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We all make some mistakes
Win or losing, we all human
We all go through things
We all dream, we all cry
We've all felt pain at some point in our lives
We'll keep on moving (on moving)
Yeah, we all human (we all human)
Oh yeah
See no matter what color of your skin
It feels just the same when the knife goes in
And no matter who gonna win or lose
We all gonna bleed the same shade of rouge
We'd feel much better if we told the truth
We're so good together, but we mad confused
So human
Rich or poor, young or old
We all out here, we're tryna save our souls
Yeah, we all learning (we all learning)
Yeah, we all human (we all human)
We all go through things (all go through things)
Hey, hey
Oh, my goodness, where's the goodness?
Where's the music? Where's the colors?
We keep losing (we keep losing)
'Cause this ain't human (this ain't human)
We going through things (we going through things)
Yeah
See no matter what color of your skin
It feels just the same when the knife goes in
And no matter who gonna win or lose
We all gonna bleed the same shade of rouge
We'd feel much better if we told the truth
We're so good together, but we mad confused
So human
At the end of the day, we all on the run
So don't fight the bullet, baby, fight the gun
'Cause who knows really what's gon' happen next?
We all out here tryna do our best
We all got a heart, baby, more or less
We all got a first and a final breath
So human
We all go through things
We all go through things
We all go through things
Mmm, yeah
We all go through things
God, our Father, I come to say thank you for your love today
Thank you for my family, and all the friends you give to me
Guard me in the dark of night, and in the morning send your light
Amen
So human
So human
So human
We all go through things
In Emeli Sandé’s song Human, she reminds us of the commonalities that bind all of humanity together. We all experience love, pain, joy, and sorrow at different points in our lives. Winning or losing, rich or poor, young or old, we all do our best to save our souls and improve our lives. The song asserts that we would be better off if we were more honest about our struggles and recognized the goodness, music, and colors that make life worth living. Despite our differences in race, gender, or class, we all bleed the same shade of red when we are cut by the knife of life. In the end, we are all running towards the unknown future, trying to make the best of the time we have on this earth.
