Maybe
Emeli Sandé Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When we first moved in together
Couldn't keep hands off each other
Now we're lying back to back
And silence in the black
We used to laugh until we cried
You used look at me and smile
Now we hardly say hello
And feelings never show
And all the signs seem to say love is lost
But I don't wanna give up what we've got

Maybe you could stay a bit longer
I could try a bit harder
We could make this work
But maybe we should stop pretending
We both know we're hurting
Maybe it's time to go

We broke up last Sunday night
Keep on thinking 'bout the fight
Rest my head against the wall
Your bags are by the door

Then your key turns in the lock
You see me on the stairs and stop
Have you had a change of heart?
Can we go back to the start?
But all the signs seem to say love is lost
But I don't wanna give up yet because

Maybe you could stay a bit longer
I could try a bit harder
We could make this work
But maybe we should stop pretending
We both know we're hurting
Maybe it's time to go

Maybe it's time to go
Maybe it's time to go
Maybe it's time to go (go)
We could make it work, we could make it work

Maybe you could stay a bit longer
Or I could try a bit harder
We could make this work
But maybe we should stop pretending
Both of us are hurting
Maybe it's time to go
Maybe it's time to go

Maybe we could make this work
Maybe it's time to go

Maybe we could make this work
Maybe it's time to go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Emeli Sandé's song Maybe is about a relationship that has lost its spark and has begun to fade away, but the two people involved are reluctant to let go of what they've had. The first verse paints a picture of a couple that has fallen out of love with each other; they used to be inseparable, but now they lay back-to-back in silence. They stopped expressing their love for each other and now hardly acknowledge each other's presence. The chorus talks about the couple trying to make things work, but they're just pretending, they both know they're hurting, and maybe it's time to end things. The second verse talks about the break up- the baggage is by the door, but the guy comes back, and the girl wonders if they can start anew. However, she knows deep down that they've lost their love, and the chorus plays on again.

The theme of the lyrics is relatable- the feeling of falling out of love with someone, yet not wanting to let go because of the good times shared together. The lines "Maybe you could stay a bit longer, I could try a bit harder, we could make this work. But maybe we should stop pretending, we both know we're hurting, maybe it's time to go" reiterate this internal dilemma that people face in such situations.

Sì, io sono sensibile. E sono anche forte.
Sono introspettiva. Ed estroversa.
Amo la solitudine. E sono espansiva.
Sono fragile. Ed intensa. Mi sento umile.
E so quanto valgo. Sono riservata.
E a volte esplosiva. Sono delicata.
E determinata.
Se assisto al successo di qualcuno mi commuovo di gioia ed empatia;
ma anche se assisto al dolore di qualcuno, non posso evitare di piangere.
Sento tutto, sento sempre.

Her voice. #damn Lost for words. She can really sing! perfect voice. 51 people are still living in caveman days. They're clueless about good quality music. smh, sad.

Don't get me wrong I love Emeli Sande, but have you ever thought its not that they don't like her voice maybe the song is just not their type of vibe. What if they like her too? Just because you like an artist doesn't mean you have to like every song they make .-. #IMJUSTSAYINGTHOUGH
