" Here on Rasin Kreyol (which translates as "Creole Roots"), reigning queen of Haitian song Emeline Michel covers a lot of ground, writing songs that draw upon Haitan compas, twoubadou and rara as well as jazz, rock, pop, bossa nova and samba. Whichever direction the singer goes, her voice is clear and forceful as she dramatically imparts her political lyrics in Haitian Creole and French, offering up messages about AIDS, social justice and peace. She does this skill and class: Michel repeats the line "Tell me, where is peace?" to chilling effect on "Mon Rêve," where she's joined by background singers, flute and voodoo hand drums. At the other end of the spectrum, "Ban'm La Jwa" is uplifting with its driving calypso-jazz grooves. While the singer has released a handful of albums as imports over a 15-year career, Rasin Kreyol, her Times Square records debut, is a standout that should help U.S. audiences catch up with the French speaking world that already adores her. Fwa sa m damou tou bon vre
Mwen t'ap jwe lago kache
Kache pa vle di kase
Pèsonn pa kwè, men se vre
Kounye a m damou tout bon vre
Nou tou pre, je nan je, kè m kase
Tout moun di sa k pral pase (M tou konn sa k pral pase)Mwen jwenn yon zanmi
Dous tankou yon mango mi
Lannuit nou pou n jemi
M pa sa dòmi
Nou met joure, n met kraze, n met brize
Lè kòk ap chante, n'a fèk kare ap danse
Lanmou se flanm ki klere devan m
Lanmou se kan'm, se sa m vle defann
Lanmou se zam ki fè m santi m fanm
Lanmou se san m
Chak fwa tankou premye fwa
Wi mwen jwenn yon nonm, nou vle ret ansanm
Wi lanmou, wi lanmou
The song Flanm by Emeline Michel is about love and how it is like a flame that shines brightly in front of us. The first verse in the song talks about how nobody wants to believe in love, but this time around, the love is real. The singer mentions how she was hiding and playing games in the past, but this time she is ready for real love. People may not believe her, but she knows it is true. In the second verse, the singer finds a friend who is as sweet as a mango. They spend the night together, but she can't sleep because she is so happy. They joke around, break things, and dance when the rooster crows. The chorus repeats that love is a flame that shines in front of her, it is her weapon, it makes her feel like a woman, and it is her blood.
The singer describes how love is something that is timeless and goes beyond just physical pleasure. Every time is like the first and last, and love is something that is for them both. They can’t be apart and will always stay together. The chorus repeats that love is her flame, her weapon, her femininity, and her blood. This song is a beautiful representation of how love is something that can be difficult to explain, but when we have it, it is like a fiery passion that can't be contained.

I'm back here in 2021. Now in my mid 30s looking back and realizing how my parents and their friends remember their youth. I listen to this song every once in while and the nostalgia strikes. 🇭🇹
@yentlbeliard-joseph1017
It played on a Spotify playlist 4 weeks ago and I was so paralyzed with nostalgia when it played that I didn't take the time to look at the artist and song title. Took me 4 weeks to find it. My God, so many memories and such a beautiful song. Only now in my mid-30s too (understanding more creole) that I'm realizing how empowering of a song it is!
