Well, ELP were actually a 70s progressive rock band. Most 80s music did not sound like this. In fact prog rock was mostly dead in the 80s but it could be argued that ELP (with this album) helped revive it (along with Marillion).

Hmm, perhaps he said that whatwith how it'd been since three years earlier (1983) than the above tune that his band Yes came with their hit album 90125 , upon which the music sounded a lot like the '86 tune by Emerson, Lake, & Powell up there.

Give Yes' 1983 hit album 90125 a listen if you haven't before already and you'll hear what I mean in the similarities of about every track on the album to the above 1986 "old fashioned" tune.

The melody is originally from the old English folk song 'Lovely Joan'. It was also adapted by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 'Fantasia on Greensleeves', for the counterpoint section. Brilliantly adapted by Emerson in 'Touch and Go' and then worked up into the finished piece here.

No matter how often I return to this song, I'm always swept up in its grandiosity. A part of me is still shaken by Keith's sudden death, but his memory and music is not "tainted" for me. None of us will ever truly know the physical and emotional anguish he felt in his last days, and to dismiss his actions as throwing it all away makes you no better than those who taunted him for the nerve damage. Of course I wish he was still with us, but the most we can do now is encourage people struggling with similar feelings to reach out, and to keep watching these videos. Keith lives in this music, where he seemed to feel most alive. His legacy will live on.

"Touch And Go" was the very introduction of the MTV generation to the music of ELP. I first heard this visiting family in St. Catherines, Ontario on Canadian rock radio. It was like nothing I had heard before - absolutely LOVED it at first listen... summer 1986! (Thank you, to my cousin Terry Kelly.)

RIP Keith Emerson... you left SUCH a legacy of music. Incredible. "3" featuring Emerson & Carl Palmer in 1988 was my 1st rock concert - and that changed my life forever. So sad over this particular death. I will never forget you, Keith Emerson...

I am still a huge Greg Lake fan, and this Trio blew me away in 1986 with this song. Whenever I am singing on stage, I'm either trying to be belting/growling like the lead singer of Blood Sweat and Tears, or I'm trying to sing like Greg Lake. Even though this was later in their career,they were actually at the top of their game with Power and simple clarity..especially with the addition of Cozy.They were in heavy rotation on FM radio, MTV/Guest VJs Touring etc..sadly record company didn't support them enough and health personal schedule problems and tragedies followed.. until we meet again we have this Perfect Rock !

4 or 5 years ago, Carl Palmer was interviewed in Drumhead magazine. It's lengthy, and he discussed his entire career! At this time, he had commitments to the band Asia, and was not available for Keith and Greg. Cozy was hired. Cozy called Carl to make sure he knew and be respectful. Carl told him that from a business standpoint, it benefited Carl a great deal. He would get more royalties from interest in ELP and make money in Asia. He gave Cozy his blessing, and said absolutely go out on your and keep them out as long as you can!

I never paid any attention to the the Powell incarnation of ELP who obviously was just as much a legend as Keith and Greg. Now, all three of our Rock and Prog heroes have gone from us - at least I got to see all three performing live in concert on many occasions. From Keith with the Nice, then the original ELP many times, followed by the reincarnated Nice in later years. One of my BIG regrets is I never got to see King Crimson who must have been incredible to see live with Greg in the line-up. Cozy was brilliant - as you would expect with Richie Blackmore's Rainbow -but, too many big ego's etc in Rainbow. so Powell's stay there was relatively brief! RIP Greg, Keith and Cozy - at least the video footage of them that exists has the potential to live on forever as long as humanity exists!!! Thank you for the brilliant recordings and exceptional Live Concert performances ......

Last Friday I had a flashback moment when I thought of some of my old time favorites and decided to youtube them and listen while I worked. This is one of the videos I looked up and replayed several times. Sunday I was saddened to hear the Keith Emerson had died of an apparent suicide. The reason given: "He was afraid of disappointing his fans". Nerve damage in his right hand was hindering his ability to play and he was receiving criticizing messages from so called fans. I hope they realize the role they played in leading to this tragedy. I think I'll watch it again and be fascinated at his amazing talent. R.I.P. Keith.

One of my favourite songs of all time on keyboards, look at Keith Emerson could be flying a spaceship!! Powell's power on the drums and Greg's voice makes this one helluva track. I counted about 9 racks of keyboards in front of Keith, that's a choice of about 800 keys to play.

Same here! To this day, one of the best shows I have seen and I've seen many great shows, but I always was a huge ELP fan. Same year I saw Peter Gabriel's So also at the Montreal Forum as well as Rush Power Windows with Marillion opening. What a year for music :)

Cozy is one of my favorite drummers...he played with great feel, never over-playing or under playing a song. This video left quite an impression on me as a young drummer, as I taped up my drum heads on my first kit, like his in this video.

BBC used this for the opening music of their NBA Highlights show back in the late 80's....For over 30 years I've remembered the tune but had no idea what it was. Came on the radio today and I was like, HOLY CRAP!! Fantastic.

I have only recently caught up on their music via you tube. And in reading some of these comments, it made me look deeper. So i went on Wiki. All I can say is, WOW!! I knew Lake was involved since the late 70's, but didn't realize it all. He WROTE LUCKY MAN, at 12. AMAZING!! I intend to read some more. Read a bit on Keith. Very impressive also. These are the types of things I'm thankful for the internet for.

This is the edited version of the video. It leaves out the best part where Greg back peddles quickly on his feet to the sound of Cozy's machine gun drum attack pattern! Greg's voice was still intact here. It changed considerably on the subsequent albums.

I'm 52 and remember listening to this song when I was in High School. I heard it today watching the movie McGruber. I don't think I've ever heard the song since the 80s, great memories.
