Emi’s musical career began with piano lessons at the age of six. She showed great potential and was selected to be one of five students taught by an accomplished classical pianist in Seattle. She expanded to jazz for a collaborative experience, and its synchronization between the fingers, voice, and ear helped her explore singing. Upon hearing Emi’s distinctive imagery and style, fellow musicians and friends encouraged her to further develop her voice. Emi initially composes for piano and voice, but is pleased with the results of adding bass and drums on her latest demo, Magnolias.
While studying Ethnomusicology at college in California, Emi has been performing at premiere venues in Hollywood, including: The Hotel Café, The Tangier, and Room 5. When in Seattle, she performs at The Pink Door, Tula’s, and Dimitrio’s Jazz Alley, and in New York, she is showcased at the Sidewalk Café. She has performed at the Kahoutek Music Festival, Kobe Jazz Festival, and Northwest Folklife Festival. Recently, "Sunrise" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival with West 32nd, a film by Michael Kang. The range of venues and audience attests to her ability to abridge folk, anti-folk, jazz, rock, and pop. Songs from Magnolias and Live @ The Hotel Café are broadcasted on KEXP 90.3 and The End 107.7 in Seattle, KSPC 88.7 in Los Angeles, and on KGRL.fm alongside Ani DiFranco and India Arie. She was the only solo and singer-songwriter semi-finalist in the Experience Music Project’s 2007 Sound Off! Competition and is the winner of the 2007 Seattle-Kobe Female Jazz Vocalist Competition's adult division.
Emi sends CDs nationally and internationally to those who request them via MySpace. Throughout the process of performing, Emi is the tree in the urban street: she grows steadily and true to herself, despite efforts to box her in.
"Armed with a piano and all-embracing musical training, Emi Meyer showcases her distinct vocals, personal lyrics and soaring compositions with a sound spanning folk, jazz, rock, and pop." –Experience Music Project Sound Off! 2007
“With today’s lack of appreciation in Jazz, Emi comes to bring back some loving to the genre. Her EP Magnolias is a sure sign that we are to expect something big from this emerging artist.” –“KGRL’s Top Ten Artists to Watch Out for In 2007,” Metroblogging Los Angeles
“She’s only 19, but Meyer’s strong and creamy voice has already landed the jazz siren gigs at Tula’s and the Pink Door.” –The Stranger
shine On
Emi Meyer Lyrics

You already have me on your side
It's a simple chemistry
We felt we knew each other at first sight
Just like the flares of the sun
That reach each and everyone
Equally
All along we wander
Under surface for the chance to break through the ice
Even gentle melting will suffice
Seek as if nothing happens twice
Just like the flares of the sun
That reach each and everyone
Equality
Light in me is a part of the light in you
La-la-la-la-la-la-la light
Will shine on, shine on
Triumphantly
La-la-la-la-la-la-la light
Will shine on, shine on
Triumphantly
Twinkle on the banks of the Nile
To a prism in your mind
Illumnating the way you want to go
Who will be
Your destiny
Some people call this lumière
Others say that it's noor
I'm sure
The light in me is a part of the light in you
Triumphantly
La-la-la-la-la-la-la light
Will shine on, shine on
Triumphantly
La-la-la-la-la-la-la light
Will shine on, shine on
Triumphantly
La-la-la-la-la-la-la light
Will shine on, shine on
Triumphantly
You are my hikari
In these lyrics, Emi Meyer reflects on the connection and chemistry that she has with someone special in her life. She describes this connection as simple and not requiring any extra efforts or calculation. It's a connection that was felt instantly, as if they already knew each other at first sight. She likens this connection to the flares of the sun, which reach everyone equally, and suggests that the light in her is a part of the light in the other person.
The second stanza describes the journey of two people as they wander and seek to break through the ice. Emi suggests that even gentle melting can suffice, implying that this journey may not be easy but it can still be achieved with patience and perseverance. As they seek their path, Emi reflects that the light within each person will shine on triumphantly, like the flares of the sun.
In the final stanza, Emi uses different words for light, suggesting that it can be called different things by different people. She concludes by saying that the light in her is a part of the light in the other person, and that they will shine on triumphantly together.
