Heard It All
Emilie Autumn Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning
It's too hard to mention
I heard a thing once
I can't even say
I had a moment
Of doubtful suspension
But it's almost forgotten
It's been pulled away
By too many hands
Touching where I stand
And I can't fall
Because you'll try and catch me
Never let me go
You don't think I know
I've heard it all
And so you'll never scratch my skin
I heard a boy say
It's all my invention
A fictional statement
It's all in my head
All I can tell you
My only pretension
Was in thinking you listened
To me when I said
By too many hands
Touching where I stand
And I can't fall
Because you'll try and catch me
Never let me go
You don't think I know
I've heard it all
And so you'll never scratch my skin
I've heard your paltering and your lies
And it won't go away when I close my eyes
Do you think of me when I'm no where near
When you shut your mouth tell me what you hear
I've heard it all
I've heard it all
I've heard it
Somebody called me
A paranoid angel
From on the other
Side of the wall
You might be special
But it's too late to change now
'Cause it isn't the first time
I've heard it all
For too many years
To relieve my fears
So I'm advising you
To get away and fast
If it's my mistake
Then the blame I'll take
You're not the first
And you won't be the last
By too many hands
Touching where I stand
And I can't fall
Because you'll try and catch me
Never let me go
You don't think I know
I've heard it all
And so you'll never scratch my skin
The song "Heard It All" by Emilie Autumn is a very personal, introspective song that talks about the singer's experiences of doubt, paranoia and betrayal. The lyrics are written in a cryptic, metaphorical language, which makes it difficult to fully grasp their meaning. The first stanza talks about a traumatic experience, which the singer cannot openly talk about but still haunts her. The second stanza refers to a boy who dismisses the singer's concerns as imaginary, which shows a lack of empathy and understanding.
The chorus bridges the different stanzas through the repetition of the line "I've heard it all", which means that the singer has been exposed to a lot of criticism, lies and manipulation over the years. The use of the phrase "too many hands" suggests that there are many people who have acted against the singer's interests, and they have left her feeling vulnerable and exposed. She cannot fall because someone is always there to catch her, but this support is not always genuine. The singer also mentions that her words have been dismissed and her skin has not been scratched, which signifies that her experiences have been invalidated, and she has not been able to fully express herself.
The song "Heard It All" is an expression of the singer's emotional turmoil, and it resonates with many people who have gone through similar experiences. The use of metaphors and vivid imagery makes the song captivating and memorable. The singer's haunting voice and the melancholy melody create a somber atmosphere that adds to the gravity of the lyrics.

I heard a story
I was told a tale
It's too hard to mention
It's difficult to talk about
I heard a thing once
Someone once told me something
I can't even say
It's not safe for me to speak
I had a moment
I briefly wavered in my conviction
Of doubtful suspension
But I quickly brushed it aside
But it's almost forgotten
It's a distant memory now
It's been pulled away
I've distanced myself from it
By too many hands
Too many people have interfered
Touching where I stand
Trying to influence me
And I can't fall
I won't let them bring me down
Because you'll try and catch me
You'll support me if I stumble
Never let me go
You'll always be there for me
You don't think I know
But I'm aware of what's happening
I've heard it all
I've been told every lie and falsehood
And so you'll never scratch my skin
But your words will never hurt me
I heard a boy say
A boy once told me
It's all my invention
That it's all made up
A fictional statement
A story with no truth
It's all in my head
It's just my imagination
All I can tell you
All I can say is
My only pretension
My only claim is
Was in thinking you listened
That you paid attention to me
To me when I said
When I spoke my mind
I've heard your paltering and your lies
I've heard all of your deceit
And it won't go away when I close my eyes
It lingers in my mind
Do you think of me when I'm no where near
Do I cross your mind when I'm gone?
When you shut your mouth tell me what you hear
When you stop talking, what do you really feel?
Somebody called me
Someone labeled me
A paranoid angel
As someone overly suspicious
From on the other
From the other side of the wall
Side of the wall
From a different point of view
You might be special
You could be unique
But it's too late to change now
But it's too little, too late
'Cause it isn't the first time
Because I've been here before
I've heard it all
I've been deceived too many times
For too many years
For far too long
To relieve my fears
To ease my worries
So I'm advising you
So I'm warning you
To get away and fast
Leave quickly and don't look back
If it's my mistake
If I'm to blame
Then the blame I'll take
I'll accept responsibility
You're not the first
You're not the first person to deceive me
And you won't be the last
And you won't be the last

Growing up in Malibu, California, she began learning the violin at the age of four and left regular school five years later with the goal of becoming a world-class violinist; she practiced eight or nine hours a day and read a wide range of literature. Progressing to writing her own music, she studied under various teachers and went to Indiana University, which she left over issues regarding the relationship between classical music and the appearance of the performer. Through her own independent label Traitor Records, Autumn debuted with her classical album On a Day: Music for Violin & Continuo, followed by the release in 2003 of her album Enchant.
She appeared in singer Courtney Love's backing band on her 2004 America's Sweetheart tour and returned to Europe. She released the 2006 album Opheliac with the German label Trisol Music Group. In 2007, she released Laced/Unlaced; the re-release of On a Day... appeared as Laced with songs on the electric violin as Unlaced. She later left Trisol to join New York-based The End Records in 2009 and release Opheliac in the United States, where previously it had only been available as an import. Currently she is on tour to promote her newest album Fight Like A Girl. She played the role of Painted Doll in Darren Lynn Bousman's 2012 film The Devil's Carnival.
