She doesn't love me like she used to
There's a cold wind blowing through these leaves along the track
She doesn't love me like she used to
Today I told my darling in the fields of June
That I do not love him like I used to
Well the wind began to blow and the sky turned from blue
But I burnt my hands trying for our love
And I broke my nails too
So don't accuse me now for going back on our vow
I'm gonna bury you in these fields of June
How the hell did it ever come to this?
Why does she not love me like before?
I'm lonely and I'm sorry and I don't know what to do
Since she told me that she doesn't love me like she used to
Well baby I have reasons that you never listened to
As to why I do not love you like before
And you might be sorry and may not know what to do
But don't bother me for I do not love you like I used to
But I burnt my hands trying for our love
And if you go then I'll split in two
So don't you leave me now and don't go back on our vow
And don't you bury me in these fields of June
But I burnt my hands trying for our love
And if you go I'll split in two
So don't you leave me now and don't go back on our vow
Don't you bury me in these fields of June
Don't you bury me in these fields of June
The song Fields of June by Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo is a bittersweet ballad about the breakdown of a relationship. The opening lyrics set a tone of sadness and loss, as the singer reflects on how their partner no longer loves them the same way as before. The imagery of the grey sky and cold wind blowing through the leaves creates a sense of loneliness and isolation. The chorus reveals that the singer has told their partner that they too no longer love them as they used to, and this confession has caused tension and strife in their relationship.
The second verse delves deeper into the reasons why the singer no longer loves their partner, and how they feel frustrated and unheard in their relationship. The repeated refrain of "But I burnt my hands trying for our love" speaks to the pain and sacrifice the singer has endured to try to make the relationship work, but it has ultimately led to heartbreak. The final verse is a plea from the singer to their partner not to leave them, even though they have both acknowledged that their love has changed. The repetition of "Don't you bury me in these fields of June" speaks to the fear of being forgotten or erased in the wake of a failed relationship.
Overall, Fields of June is a poignant and emotive song that explores the complexities of love and loss. The honesty and vulnerability in the lyrics, combined with the haunting melody and beautiful harmonies in the music, make it a standout track in Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo's discography.
