I Hate the Homecoming Queen
Emily Osment Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little short skirt with a big attitude
She wants to be a model
Wants to be on the tube
Yeah
It's one thing or another
She's trouble trouble
Watch out if you're near
She can bring you to tears

She's got two boyfriends
And three wannabees
They follow her around like she's Aphrodite
She's number one rated
But she's already jaded
And she's following the trends
In her Mercedes Benz
Everyone wants to know her name
Walking down the hall she's every guys dream

I hate the homecoming queen
I'm pretty damn sure she she can't stand me
She thinks she's on the cover of a magazine
I hate the homecoming queen
Tonight
That's right

Non-fat sugar-free mochachini
She says "Give it to me now you can keep the receipt."
Drinking one after the other
She's trouble trouble
Tossing back her hair and she just don't care
Everyone wants to play her game
Walking down the street she's every guys dream

I hate the homecoming queen
I'm pretty damn sure she can't stand me
She thinks she's on the cover of a magazine
I hate the homecoming queen
Tonight
That's right

She gets everything she asks for
But she's somehow always wanting more

Little short skirt with a big attitude
She wants to be a model
Wants to be on the tube
Yeah
It's one thing or another
She's trouble trouble
Watch out if your near
She can bring you to tears

I hate the homecoming queen
I'm pretty damn sure she can't stand me
She thinks she's on the cover of a magazine
I hate the homecoming queen

I hate the homecoming queen
I'm pretty damn sure she can't stand me
She thinks she's on the cover of a magazine
I hate the homecoming queen

Tonight
That's right

Overall Meaning

The song "I Hate the Homecoming Queen" by Emily Osment is about a teenage girl who dislikes the popular and vain homecoming queen in her school. The first verse describes the homecoming queen as someone with a short skirt and a big attitude, who wants to be a model and on TV. The chorus repeats the title of the song, with the singer expressing her dislike for the girl and highlighting her belief that the homecoming queen can't stand her either.

The second verse portrays the homecoming queen as a girl with two boyfriends and three wannabees who follow her around. She is rated as number one, but she is already jaded and always following trends. The bridge of the song adds to her characterization as she is shown to be someone who gets everything she asks for but is always wanting more. This further emphasizes her shallow and selfish personality.

In conclusion, the song depicts the singer's disdain for the homecoming queen in her school who seems to be perfect in everyone else's eyes but is intolerable to her. It highlights the issue of social hierarchies in high school and the pressure to conform to societal standards.

This song is is still relevant and resonates even years after graduating high school, because you know it's true. Homecoming Queens never outgrow their title, and it's sickening. High school is a joke. It's responsible for lacking self-esteem due to all the pretentious cliques and distinctive crowds that determine who is worthy of love and respect and who's not at an impressionable age. Why does there even have to be a Homecoming Queen? Why not just let everybody just enjoy Homecoming (or even prom, for that matter) as a collective and equal student body, instead of singling out one person as superior to everybody else? Schools are only encouraging narcissistic, self-absorbed behaviors by holding these kinds of competitions, and it creates a beauty/social standard in kids' minds that is impossible to live up to, because it's all a fantasy. We are teaching them that unless you meet these specific, unrealistic social qualifications you are worth nothing and should feel like sh*t about yourself. And the few select people who do match the standard are only setting themselves up to live their life in a perpetual sense of entitlement and expecting others to worship them as it was unconsciously enforced in high school. The concept of Homecoming Queens needs to be eradicated; it's undignified, and only causes emotional and social destruction on both ends of the spectrum.

My comment just escalated very quickly. I apologize. 😂

This is true in just about every high school except mine. The last 3 homecoming queens at my school were the sweetest ladies I've ever met.

However, I don't think that about ALL the popular girls, and I actually had a few of them as friends back in high school and a good friend of mine was voted for Homecoming Queen the year she graduated and I was super happy for her because she truly earned it. She was one of the top students in my class, part of several clubs in school that no one really signed up for, like HERO club and FCCLA, and she was the sweetest person I had ever met, I cried when she graduated, I still miss her, even though it's only been two years, but she was truly the most incredible person I had ever met

AJ PostMortem

Amen, and it's like after high school, they want to be super fake and try to be your best friend to your face, then go on IG and talk shit about you, thinking that you're still the shy, quiet kid that you were back in school and it's funny really because they never even tried to get to know you in school and get mad if you're doing better in life than them and they start acting super petty 😂😂😂
