Something To Hold On To
Emily Warren Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You put your lips to nicotine and say it's just the one
But nicotine don't care about your lungs
You squeeze my hand, you say it's fine
It's only when you're drunk
I wish I'd let you just do what you want

But I'm gonna need something to hold on to
Something to hold on to
Yeah, I'm gonna need something to hold on to
Something to hold on to

Now I feel bad, I apologize
I must leave you alone
You hate to feel like you're being controlled
Sorry if I squeeze too tight, I really hope you know
The reason I'm so scared to let you go is

I'm gonna need something to hold on to
Something to hold on to
Yeah, I'm gonna need something to hold on to
Something to hold on to

If you knew the shooting pain that hits me in my chest
You'd think before you did that to yourself
And like I do, you picture us, both knowing it's the end
And wishing that you'd heard me when I said that

I'm gonna need something to hold on to
Something to hold on to

That, I'm gonna need something to hold on to
Something to hold on to

Wow. That opening line... "you put your lips to nicotine and say it's just the one, but nicotine don't care about your lungs..." Honestly, what I love about this song and video is its honesty. I feel like I'm sitting with my grandmother and listening to her tell a story about a man who she loved, but broke her heart. Emily captures that genuineness and intimacy so well. Her acting is incredible, and I feel the heartache in this character so deeply. When you care too much about a person to let them destroy themselves... Her performance and these lyrics are so gripping and heartfelt. The last verse gets me... "I wish you knew the shooting pain that hits me in my chest, and think before you did that to yourself. And like I do, you picture us, both knowing it's the end, and wishing that you heard me when I said... I'm gonna need something to hold on to..." This is a wholesome and realistic song about real life, and it's an A+ in my books. It deserves far more views. This is beautiful!

She’s doing well in her own way. The Capsize acoustic video is my favorite though.

The lyrics are beyond powerful. The message is so strong and most hits these days are all about the same topics. Songs like this are the reason why I am involve with music writing and the music industry. A hit song isn't just all about the background vocals, bass, tempo, etc... To me it is more about the lyrics and meaning to a song. Music should be more like this. Lyrics are everything! Im not sure about anyone else, but a fantastic hit is a song written with personal experience so people can get "goosies" (As JLO would say). I love a song that makes me come into some tears based on lyrics and the person singing it.... This is true art. <3
