Identity Crisis
Emily Weisband Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh oh
I'ma let you in on a secret

I'd be a slut one day, and a prude the next
Yeah I'd wear nothing but a bra, then a turtleneck
I'd send a picture for attention, tell him he could get it
But he'd never get very far
Yeah I pretend that I like drinking and cigarettes
Every time I hung out with certain friends
And I was hitting up Bible Study with the rest
But personality of the heart

Tryna please my Daddy, so he'd be proud
And driving myself mad to fit in that crowd
And wakin' up so empty, with no way out
Realisin' I don't know who I am now

And holy shit it's heavy, being in your twenties
Time of life you're figuring out what it is you believe
God is way more patient than he's given credit

Turns out that your girl was the farthest thing from authentic
But I'm looking and I'll find it
Yeah I'm proud to say that I'm in an identity crisis

Oh oh oh

Yeah I'm in an identity crisis
Identity crisis, yeah

Overall Meaning

Emily Weisband's song Identity Crisis speaks about the challenges and confusion we face in our twenties while trying to discover our true selves. Emily shares her journey of constantly changing her personality and behavior to please others, whether it was wearing a bra or a turtleneck, pretending to like drinking and smoking, attending both Bible Study and certain social events. Emily acknowledges that it was all an attempt to get validation from people and make them proud. She speaks about the pressure of fitting in with society's standards and expectations, including the approval of her father. Emily shares how these actions left her feeling empty and confused, with a loss of her sense of self.

Emily then talks about how heavy it can be in your twenties, trying to figure out what you believe, and who you really are. She expresses how comforting it was to realize that God is more patient than people give Him credit for, and that it's okay to make mistakes while figuring out who you are. She admits that her past behaviors weren't authentic and that she was far from her true self. However, she's on a journey to find it, and she takes pride in her identity crisis, knowing that it's a step towards discovering her true self.

Overall, Identity Crisis is an insightful song that speaks about the struggles of discovering your true self in your twenties, the pressures of conforming to society's standards, and the importance of authenticity and self-discovery.

Hey guys! I'm so happy you somehow found this song and it led you here. I've done a lot wrong and a lot right, been totally myself and also pretended to be something I'm not... we all have! But I'm definitely learning that all of that is okay. God didn't make us to be one dimensional robots - I'm finding my individuality in the emotions and layers and questions I was created to have. This song is just the prelude to a record that explores it all... no matter how contradicting they might be sometimes haha. I hope you'll stick with me and ride that ride! I'll probably always be on it, but maybe that's kind of the point. Hit the subscribe button!
