Eminem
Eminem/Bruno Mars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ayo (ayo)
What do you think about two grown ass men living together?
Haha, alright (Whoo Kid)
Well, what do you think about another grown ass man
Living right upstairs from 'em?
Well, them two grown ass men living together on my nuts
And that's you right above 'em
Get the fuck off 'em

When I rhyme, somehow I think I must be subliminally throwin'
Viagra at these fags that got these hard-ons for me
But I suppose anything goes when it comes to my flows
Nothin' is off limits, except for Michael's nose
I didn't know, I'm so sorry, please tell me what I can do
To make it up to those of you who I offended
Ooh, I got it, I got an apology for Steve Harvey too
It's in my pocket, uh, wait, here it is, fuck you
Hey, what do you say, Andre? What's new?
Life is good, man, I'm chillin', 50, how 'bout you?
Yayo's out of jail, Buck is out on bail

We'll get through, we always do
ODB, rest in peace, G-G-G-Unit

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Eminem/Bruno Mars's song "Eminem" seems to be a conversation between two friends, with Whoo Kid interjecting at times. The lyrics illustrate a situation where two grown men are living next to each other, and one of them is annoyed because another man is living above them. The chorus of the song, where they yell "Eminem" is a reference to the rapper, and the song continues with Eminem talking about the controversy he creates with his rhymes, and how that has led to some apologies he needs to make, including one to Steve Harvey.

Eminem is known for his controversial lyrics and is no stranger to criticism, but he seems to embrace it in this song. Here, he pokes fun at "fags that got these hard-ons for me," implying that some people might be obsessed with him in ways that he doesn't entirely understand. He also references Michael Jackson's nose (which was famously reshaped several times), saying that nothing is off limits in his rhymes except for that. Yet, he also seems to acknowledge that some of his rhymes can be offensive, as shown by his apologies to Steve Harvey and other listeners.

Hey, what do you say, Andre? What's new? Life is good, man, I'm chillin', 50, how 'bout you?

Shoutout to Bruno, Em, and Royce. This was one of the defining songs of middle school for me. I was a 13-year-old kid who tried to act funny to make friends, never realizing I had to just be me to make the friends who mattered. I was a kid who made up stories, drew cartoons alone in his room, never thinking too far into the future. Ironically, I was too trapped in my imagination to think big. I don't regret it, or else I wouldn't be the man I am today.

Now I'm 23, and I'm proud to say I've accomplished more than I ever dreamed. I went to college, went abroad, and now I'm putting myself through school to do a job that won't make millions of dollars, but I hope will make a difference for others. And I'm not done yet! I'm still that same kid who likes to write stories and draw pictures, and no matter what, I'm gonna publish those stories someday.

The other day, I felt the saddest I've felt for a while, and it's because this social distancing stuff is finally getting to me. I felt alone and like I wasn't doing anything fulfilling with my life being stuck inside, and that hurt to think about.

But now, listening to one of the most inspirational songs of my teen years, I've been reminded of all I've accomplished and all I still need to do.

For all of you out there who feel as uplifted by this song as I do, you're not alone in this pandemic. I know you don't know me, and I don't know you, but I know that however alone you might feel, you still have things you know you have to do or want to do. Just keep pushing, bit by bit, and you'll get there, even if you didn't get there the way you thought you would. Someday, you're gonna read my stories, and the rest of the world and I will read yours.
