Lighter
Eminem/Bruno Mars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This one's for you and me, living out our dreams
We're all right where we should be
With my arms out wide I open my eyes
And now all I wanna see
Is a sky full of lighters
A sky full of lighters

By the time you hear this I will have already spiraled up
I would never do nothing to let you cowards fuck my world up
If I was you, I would duck, or get struck like lightening,
Fighters keep fighting, put your lighters up, point 'em' skyward uh
Had a dream I was king, I woke up, still king
This rap game's nipple is mine for the milking,
Till nobody else even fucking feels me, till' it kills me
I swear to god I'll be the fucking illest in this music
There is or there ever will be, disagree?
Feel free, but from now on I'm refusing to ever give up
Only thing I ever gave up's using no more excuses
Excuse me if my head is too big for this building
And pardon me if I'm a cocky prick but you cocks are slick
Poppin' shit on how you flipped ya life around, crock-o-shit
Who you dicks try to kid, flipped dick, you did the opposite
You stayed the same, 'cause cock backwards is still cock you pricks
I love it when I tell 'em shove it
Cause it wasn't that long ago when Marshall sat, luster lacked, lustered
'Cause he couldn't cut mustard, muster up nothing
Brain fuzzy, 'cause he's buzzin', woke up from that buzz
Now you wonder why he does it, how he does it
Wasn't 'cause he had buzzards circle around his head
Waiting for him to drop dead, was it?
Or was it, 'cause them bitches wrote him off
Little hussy ass buzzards, fuck it, guess it doesn't matter now, does it
What difference it make?
What it take to get it through your thick skulls
As if this ain't some bullshit
People don't usually come back this way
From a place that was dark as I was in
Just to get to this place
Now let these words be like a switch blade to a haters rib cage
And let it be known from this day forward
I wanna just say thanks 'cause your hate is what gave me the strength
So let 'em bic's raise 'cause I came with five nine
But I feel like I'm six eight

This one's for you and me, living out our dreams
We're all right where we should be
With my arms out wide I open my eyes
And now all I wanna see
Is a sky full of lighters
A sky full of lighters

By the time you hear this I'll probably already be outtie
I advance like going from toting iron
To going and buying four or five of the homies the iron man Audi
My daddy told me slow down, boy, you goin' to blow it
And I ain't gotta stop the beat a minute
To tell Shady I love him the same way that he did Dr.Dre on the Chronic
Tell him how real he is or how high I am
Or how I would kill for him for him to know it
I cried plenty tears, my daddy got a bad back
So it's only right that I right
Till he can march right
Into that post office and tell 'em to hang it up
Now his career's Lebron's jersey in twenty years
I'll stop when I'm at the very top
You shitted on me on your way up
It's 'bout to be a scary drop
Cause what goes up must come down
You going down on something you don't wanna see like a hairy box
Every hour, happy hour now
Life is wacky now
Used to have to eat the cat to get the pussy
Now I'm just the cats meow, ow
Classic cow, always down for the catch weight like Pacquiao
Y'all are doomed
I remember when T-Pain ain't wanna work with me
My car starts itself, parks itself and auto-tunes
'Cause now I'm in the Aston
I went from having my city locked up
To getting treated like Kwame Kilpatrick
And now I'm fantastic
Compared to a weed high
And y'all niggas just gossipin' like bitches on a radio and TV
See me, we fly
Y'all buggin' out like Wendy Williams staring at a bee-hive
And how real is that
I remember signing my first deal
And now I'm the second best I can deal with that
Now Bruno can show his ass, without the MTV awards gag

You and I know what it's like to be kicked down
Forced to fight, but tonight we're alright
So hold up your light, let it shine 'cause

This one's for you and me, living out our dreams
We're all right where we should be
With my arms out wide I open my eyes
And now all I wanna see

Is a sky full of lighters
A sky full of lighters

Had a dream I was king, I woke up, still king
I once dreamt of being the king, but now that I've achieved my dream I realize that it's still me. Nothing has changed, I'm still the same person I was before.

This rap game's nipple is mine for the milking, Till nobody else even fucking feels me, till' it kills me, I swear to god I'll be the fucking illest in this music, There is or there ever will be, disagree? Feel free, but from now on I'm refusing to ever give up, Only thing I ever gave up's using no more excuses
I'm going to milk this rap game for all it's worth, until I reach the point where nobody can touch me. I'm determined to be the best rapper in history, and I won't let anything or anyone stand in my way. I've given up making excuses and will not give up on this dream.

Excuse me if my head is too big for this building, And pardon me if I'm a cocky prick but you cocks are slick, Poppin' shit on how you flipped ya life around, crock-o-shit, Who you dicks try to kid, flipped dick, you did the opposite, You stayed the same, 'cause cock backwards is still cock you pricks
If I seem a little too confident, it's because I've earned the right to be. You haters are nothing but phony, and your talk about turning your life around is nothing but BS. You've stayed the same, and that's why I have no respect for any of you.

I love it when I tell 'em shove it, Cause it wasn't that long ago when Marshall sat, luster lacked, lustered, 'Cause he couldn't cut mustard, muster up nothing, Brain fuzzy, 'cause he's buzzin', woke up from that buzz, Now you wonder why he does it, how he does it, Wasn't 'cause he had buzzards circle around his head, Waiting for him to drop dead, was it? Or was it, 'cause them bitches wrote him off, Little hussy ass buzzards, fuck it, guess it doesn't matter now, does it
I enjoy telling the haters to go shove it because I remember how difficult it was for me at the beginning of my career when I lacked confidence and couldn't seem to get any traction. I was uncertain and fuzzy in my thoughts, and that caused me to feel even more confused. However, I never gave up because of the haters, who wished I would fail. But, the good news for me is that I don't let that matter anymore.

What difference it make? What it take to get it through your thick skulls, As if this ain't some bullshit, People don't usually come back this way, From a place that was dark as I was in, Just to get to this place, Now let these words be like a switch blade to a haters rib cage, And let it be known from this day forward, I wanna just say thanks 'cause your hate is what gave me the strength, So let 'em bic's raise 'cause I came with five nine, But I feel like I'm six eight
Why can't you get it through your heads that my success is not some fluke? It's not easy to come back from a dark place the way I have and climb to the top of the music industry. I've faced hate and derision at every step of my journey, but I've used that hate as fuel for my fire. So bring on the haters because I'm going to keep thriving, and every word I say will cut like a knife and remind them of how I've risen up from the ashes.

By the time you hear this I'll probably already be outtie, I advance like going from toting iron, To going and buying four or five of the homies the iron man Audi, My daddy told me slow down, boy, you goin' to blow it, And I ain't gotta stop the beat a minute, To tell Shady I love him the same way that he did Dr.Dre on the Chronic
By the time you hear this, I'll have already moved forward with my career. I'm advancing like moving from a smaller car to an extravagant Audi for my team. My father warned me to slow down, or I'd burn out, but I don't need to stop the music even for a second to express my appreciation for Shady, who helped me achieve my dreams like Dre did before.

Tell him how real he is or how high I am, Or how I would kill for him for him to know it, I cried plenty tears, my daddy got a bad back, So it's only right that I right, Till he can march right, Into that post office and tell 'em to hang it up, Now his career's Lebron's jersey in twenty years
I want to express how much I admire Shady for being a real example and for supporting me along the way as I pursued my dreams to become a successful rapper. For my dad who has a bad back, I will keep writing until I can give him the satisfaction of sticking it to those who doubted me. Now, he can wear Lebron's jersey into his nineties with pride.

I'll stop when I'm at the very top
I will not stop until I've reached my ultimate goal: to be at the very top of the music industry.

You shitted on me on your way up
You treated me poorly when you were on your way up in the industry.

It's 'bout to be a scary drop, Cause what goes up must come down, You going down on something you don't wanna see like a hairy box
You're about to drop with a thud, and it's not going to be pretty. Remember, what goes up generally comes back down, and you're headed for something you won't even want to look at.

Every hour, happy hour now, Life is wacky now, Used to have to eat the cat to get the pussy, Now I'm just the cats meow, ow, Classic cow, always down for the catch weight like Pacquiao, Y'all are doomed
Every moment is like happy hour, and life is just insane. There was a time when I had to do whatever it took to succeed, but things have changed, and now I'm living like a king. I'm unstoppable and ready for any challenge, so watch out, haters.

I remember when T-Pain ain't wanna work with me, My car starts itself, parks itself and auto-tunes
I recall a time when T-Pain didn't want anything to do with me. But now, my lifestyle is on another level, where my car starts and parks itself, and it's equipped with auto-tune features.

Cause now I'm in the Aston, I went from having my city locked up, To getting treated like Kwame Kilpatrick
Now I'm in the Aston, experiencing a completely different lifestyle than before. I've come so far, from being locked up to the point where I'm now being treated with respect and opulence.

And now I'm fantastic, Compared to a weed high, And y'all n***as just gossipin' like bitches on a radio and TV, See me, we fly, Y'all buggin' out like Wendy Williams staring at a bee-hive
I'm feeling fantastic compared to getting high on weed. Meanwhile, all the haters are gossiping like crazy on TV and radio, but I don't give a damn because we're flying high! As I see you all bug out, having never been where I am now, looking like crazy Wendy Williams staring at a beehive.

And how real is that, I remember signing my first deal, And now I'm the second best I can deal with that, Now Bruno can show his ass, without the MTV awards gag
This is all very real to me. I remember the excitement and uncertainty of signing my first record deal, and now I'm proud of my achievements. I may not be the best yet, but I'm still proud of where I'm at. Now Bruno can literally show his ass and get away with it, thanks to his success.

You and I know what it's like to be kicked down, Forced to fight, but tonight we're alright, So hold up your light, let it shine 'cause
We both understand what it means to be kicked down, yet forced to keep fighting to achieve our dreams. But tonight, everything is going to be alright, so lift up those lighters and let them shine brightly!

Shoutout to Bruno, Em, and Royce. This was one of the defining songs of middle school for me. I was a 13-year-old kid who tried to act funny to make friends, never realizing I had to just be me to make the friends who mattered. I was a kid who made up stories, drew cartoons alone in his room, never thinking too far into the future. Ironically, I was too trapped in my imagination to think big. I don't regret it, or else I wouldn't be the man I am today.

Now I'm 23, and I'm proud to say I've accomplished more than I ever dreamed. I went to college, went abroad, and now I'm putting myself through school to do a job that won't make millions of dollars, but I hope will make a difference for others. And I'm not done yet! I'm still that same kid who likes to write stories and draw pictures, and no matter what, I'm gonna publish those stories someday.

The other day, I felt the saddest I've felt for a while, and it's because this social distancing stuff is finally getting to me. I felt alone and like I wasn't doing anything fulfilling with my life being stuck inside, and that hurt to think about.

But now, listening to one of the most inspirational songs of my teen years, I've been reminded of all I've accomplished and all I still need to do.

For all of you out there who feel as uplifted by this song as I do, you're not alone in this pandemic. I know you don't know me, and I don't know you, but I know that however alone you might feel, you still have things you know you have to do or want to do. Just keep pushing, bit by bit, and you'll get there, even if you didn't get there the way you thought you would. Someday, you're gonna read my stories, and the rest of the world and I will read yours.
