The Sauce

It's all bad now, man, it's all bad
But y'all done fucked up now
Yeah! Haha! New shit!
Ayo, I just want, the whole world to know
That I did not start this, but I will finish it

Comin' up, it never mattered what color you was
If you could spit, then you could spit
That's it, that's what it was
Back when motherfuckers was straight backpackin'
Cipherin', fightin' for life in this rap
For the mic to get passed, and you psyched and you gassed
Then you hype, 'cause you last
And you might whoop some ass if you lost, then you lost
Shake hands like a man and you swallowed it
When the Unsigned Hype column in
The Source was like our only source of light
When the mics used to mean somethin', a four was like
You were the shit, now it's like the least you get
Three and a half now just means you're a piece of shit
Four and a half or five means you're Biggie, Jigga, Nas
Or Benzino shit, I don't even think you realize
You're playin' with motherfuckers' lives
I done watched Dre get fucked on The Chronic
Probably 'cause I was on it
Now you fucked me out of my mics twice, I let it slide
I said I wouldn't hold my fuckin' breath to get a five
Shit, I was right, I'da fuckin' died already tryin'
I swear to God, I never lie, I bet that's why
You let that bitch give me that bullshit review
I sat and took it, I ain't look at the shit, we knew
You'd probably try and fuck us with Obie and 50 too
Fuck a relationship! We through!
No more Source to street cred, them days is dead
Ray's got AK's to Dave Mays's head
Every issue there's an eight-page Made Men spread
Will somebody please tell whoever braids his head
That I am not afraid of this fuckin' waste of lead
On my pencil, for me to write some shit this simple
So, listen closely, as I break it down and proceed
This old G's about to get smoked like rolled weed
You don't know me or my motherfuckin' mother
You motherfuckin' punk!
Put me on your fuckin' cover just to sell your little sell-out mag
I ain't mad, I feel bad, here's an ad
Here's a poster of Ray-Ray and his dad
You wanna talk about some shit
That you don't know about, yeah?
Let's talk about how you're puttin' your own son out there
To try to eat off him because you missed your boat
You're never gonna blow, bitch, you're just too old
No wonder you're sore now, lordy, you're bored now
I'm pushin' 30, you're kickin' 40's door down
Bitch, this is war now, and you'll never beat me
All you do is cheat me out of Quotables
But you know that you'll always see me on your TV
'Cause you've got to stay up 'til three in the morning
To see your video played once on BET
So, hee hee hee, who has the last laugh? Aftermath, yeah
So, on behalf of our whole staff, kiss our asshole cracks
We'll never fold or hold back
Just know that Benzino's wack
No matter how many times I say his name, he'll never blow, jack
You're better off tryin' to bring RSO back
Look at your track record, that's how far it goes back
It's extortion, and Ray owns a portion
So, half of the staff up there is fresh out of jail from Boston
Bullyin' and bossin' Dave like a slave
They completely brainwashed him, and forced him to stay
Locked in his own office
Afraid of the softest, fakest, wannabe gangsta in New York
And it's pitiful, 'cause I would have never said shit if you'd
Have kept your mouth shut, bitch, now what?
Hit it, Clue! Spit it, Slay! New shit, exclusive
Yo, Lantern, yo Whoo Kid
You know what to do with this
Use it, I'm through, this is stupid

I can't believe I stooped to this bullshit to do this
And who you callin' a bitch, bitch? You owe me!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eminem's song The Sauce come off as an attack on The Source Magazine and its owner, Raymond "Benzino" Scott, with Eminem accusing them of corruption and bias. In the opening lines, he declares that things have gone bad, and the Magazine has messed with the wrong person. He asserts that he did not start this fight, but he was going to finish it, implying that he has been wronged by Benzino and the Magazine. He goes on to discuss the early days of rap and how back then, what mattered was talent, irrespective of skin color. He reminisces how it was about fighting for the mic to get passed and how you psyched and gassed after getting the mic. He points out that Unsigned Hype in The Source was the only source of light giving rappers the much-needed exposure.

Eminem then changes the tone of his rap to attacking the Magazine and Benzino for playing with people's lives and underscores how they have been biased in their reviews. He states he let their transgressions slide in the past but won't keep silent anymore. He accuses the Magazine of playing with his career and calls them out for giving him a poor review. He calls out Benzino's lack of talent and how he is trying to use his son's career to leverage his own career. Eminem declares that he is in it for the long haul, and Benzino will never beat him. He concludes by telling DJ Clue and DJ Slay to use his rant to create new music.

The Source magazine's Unsigned Hype column was a major platform for underground rappers to gain exposure.

When the mics used to mean somethin', a four was like You were the shit, now it's like the least you get
Receiving a rating of four (out of five) on The Source used to be a big deal, but now it is considered mediocre.

Four and a half or five means you're Biggie, Jigga, Nas Or Benzino shit, I don't even think you realize
Only legendary rappers like Biggie, Jigga, and Nas can achieve a rating of 4.5 or 5 on The Source, but the magazine gave Benzino (who is not a great rapper) a high rating, which is ridiculous.

You're playin' with motherfuckers' lives
You are messing with people's careers and reputations.

I done watched Dre get fucked on The Chronic Probably 'cause I was on it Now you fucked me out of my mics twice, I let it slide I said I wouldn't hold my fuckin' breath to get a five
I witnessed Dr. Dre get screwed by The Source when they gave his album The Chronic a mediocre rating. Now, they have given me a low rating twice, and although I didn't like it, I didn't react violently. And I knew better than to expect a high rating from them.

Shit, I was right, I'da fuckin' died already tryin' I swear to God, I never lie, I bet that's why
I was right to not expect a high rating from The Source because I would have died trying to achieve it. I swear to God, I am telling the truth and that's why I am confident in what I am saying.

You let that bitch give me that bullshit review I sat and took it, I ain't look at the shit, we knew You'd probably try and fuck us with Obie and 50 too
You allowed a mediocre reviewer to give me a terrible review, and I didn't complain because we expected it. And you were probably planning to do the same thing with Obie Trice and 50 Cent.

No more Source to street cred, them days is dead
The Source magazine no longer has credibility in the hip-hop community.

Will somebody please tell whoever braids his head That I am not afraid of this fuckin' waste of lead On my pencil, for me to write some shit this simple
Tell Benzino (who has braids) that I am not scared of him. I can easily write a diss track about him.

So, listen closely, as I break it down and proceed This old G's about to get smoked like rolled weed
Listen carefully to what I am about to say. I am going to destroy Benzino (who is old) with my words.

You don't know me or my motherfuckin' mother You motherfuckin' punk!
You don't know anything about me or my family. You are a pathetic excuse for a man.

Put me on your fuckin' cover just to sell your little sell-out mag I ain't mad, I feel bad, here's an ad Here's a poster of Ray-Ray and his dad
You featured me on your magazine cover just to boost your sales, and I don't care. In fact, here's a paid advertisement. Oh, and instead of featuring me again, why don't you feature Ray-Ray and his dad instead?

You wanna talk about some shit That you don't know about, yeah?
You want to discuss topics that you have no knowledge or experience of?

Let's talk about how you're puttin' your own son out there To try to eat off him because you missed your boat
Let's talk about how you are using your son to make money because you missed your own chance to succeed in the hip-hop industry.

You're never gonna blow, bitch, you're just too old
You will never become successful because you are too old and irrelevant.

No wonder you're sore now, lordy, you're bored now I'm pushin' 30, you're kickin' 40's door down
No wonder you are angry and bitter. You are so old that you are almost 40, while I am still in my 30s.

Bitch, this is war now, and you'll never beat me All you do is cheat me out of Quotables
This is now a war between us, and you will never win. All you do is prevent me from earning Quotables (credits for writing great lines).

But you know that you'll always see me on your TV 'Cause you've got to stay up 'til three in the morning To see your video played once on BET
You will always see me on TV because I am famous, but the only reason you can see your own video on BET (which is a low-rated TV network) is because it is played only once in the middle of the night.

We'll never fold or hold back Just know that Benzino's wack
We will never back down and we will always speak the truth. And you need to know that Benzino is a terrible rapper.

No matter how many times I say his name, he'll never blow, jack You're better off tryin' to bring RSO back Look at your track record, that's how far it goes back
No matter how often I diss Benzino, he will never be successful. You should try reviving RSO (Benzino's old rap group) instead. Even if it doesn't work, at least you tried something new.

It's extortion, and Ray owns a portion So, half of the staff up there is fresh out of jail from Boston
It's all about money and Ray Benzino (the CEO of The Source) is benefiting from this situation. Many of the magazine's staff members have just been released from jail in Boston (which is where The Source is based).

Bullyin' and bossin' Dave like a slave They completely brainwashed him, and forced him to stay Locked in his own office Afraid of the softest, fakest, wannabe gangsta in New York
They are pressuring and manipulating Dave Mays (the co-founder of The Source) so much that he feels like a slave. They have convinced him that he cannot leave his own office and that he needs to be afraid of Benzino (who is not really a gangster). It's all so pathetic.

And it's pitiful, 'cause I would have never said shit if you'd Have kept your mouth shut, bitch, now what?
It's sad that I had to say all these things but it wouldn't have happened if you hadn't opened your mouth first. Now what are you going to do?

Hit it, Clue! Spit it, Slay! New shit, exclusive Yo, Lantern, yo Whoo Kid You know what to do with this Use it, I'm through, this is stupid I can't believe I stooped to this bullshit to do this
Let the DJ play some new, exclusive music. Shout out to the DJs who know what to do with it. I am done with this petty battle, it's stupid. I can't believe I had to lower myself to do this.

And who you callin' a bitch, bitch? You owe me!
Don't call me a bitch, you owe me respect!

Not really necessary to be Eminem fans to admit this diss tract is one of the greatest diss tract in hip hop history….Love it

The Skateboard Diaries

This is better than Nail In The Coffin. He so aggressive here and I like when he's spitting raw right here

Kanna Kid

Beat is better on nail in coffin, bars r little bit better on this

adon732alex

Nail in the Coffin was insulting Benzino to a beat, barely a song.

Elijah Gilbert

@Bradley Nall Jr I respect your opinion and I hear you on why you like Nail in the Coffin more cause of the insults but I’m just saying in my opinion, the Sauce had more of a powerful attack as to me he really finished him. If you listen to Eminem dissing Mariah Carey on the Warning, you will see how much weight he has in him that he is throwing at her like he did at Benzino..

Bradley Nall Jr

@Elijah Gilbert theres more emotion yes, but Nail in the Coffin has the better insults. This song is better lyrically but Nail in the Coffin has that slow, matter of factly delivery. Then again I'm a sucker for those deliveries in diss tracks so

Sneakingm8
