When I'm Gone
Eminem (Ft. Tupac) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please, wake me when I am free
I cannot bear activity
Where my couch, I am told, "Hold no significance"
I waited and died in ignorance
But my inner eye can see, erase
Who reigned as king in another place
The green trees were reached from fall
And every man spoke of beautiful men and women together as people

War was gone because all was at peace
But now like a nightmare, I woke to see
That I live like a prisoner of poverty

Please, wake me when I am free
I cannot bear activity

Fall, I will have a ?, stricken blind
Than to live without expression of mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Eminem (Ft. Tupac)'s song 'When I'm Gone' are actually not by either of the rappers, instead they are from a poem by Assata Shakur, a Black Panther and activist who was accused of killing a police officer in 1973 and later escaped from prison and fled to Cuba. The song starts with the lines "Please, wake me when I am free, I cannot bear activity", which expresses the hopelessness and desire for freedom from the oppression faced by Black people in America. Assata describes how mundane activities such as sitting on a couch have no significance when living under oppression and how she waited and died in ignorance before being able to see the truth through her inner eye. She uses the metaphor of a king in another place to highlight how white supremacy has created a false reality of who holds power and privilege.

Assata goes on to describe a utopian world with green trees and every person living in peace where war has no place. However, this dream is shattered as she comes back to reality and finds herself living like a 'prisoner of poverty', facing the daily struggles of living in poverty and being discriminated against. She would rather fall and be stricken blind than live without the ability to express her mind, which shows the importance of freedom of expression to her. Overall, the lyrics of 'When I'm Gone' bring attention to the structural oppression and lack of freedom experienced by Black people in America, while also expressing a sense of hope for a better world.
