Airplanes
Eminem Feat B.O.B & Harley Wiliam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky are like shooting stars?
I could really use a wish right now
Wish right now
Wish right now
Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky
Are like shooting stars?
I could really use a wish right now
Wish right now
Wish right now

Yeah, I could use a dream or a genie or a wish
To go back to a place much simpler than this
'Cause after all the partyin' and smashin' and crashin'
And all the glitz and the glam and the fashion
And all the pandemonium and all the madness
There comes a time where you fade to the blackness
And when you starin' at that phone in your lap
And you're hopin' but them people never call you back
But that's just how the story unfolds
You get another hand soon after you fold
And when your plans unravel in the sand
What would you wish for if you had one chance?
So airplane, airplane, sorry I'm late
I'm on my way so don't close that gate
If I don't make that then I'll switch my flight
And I'll be right back at it by the end of the night

Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky are like shooting stars? (Shooting stars)
I could really use a wish right now (Wish right now)
Wish right now (Wish right now)
Wish right now (Wish right now)
Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky
Are like shooting stars? (Shooting Stars)
I could really use a wish right now (Wish right now)
Wish right now (Wish right now)
Wish right now (Wish right now)

Yeah, yeah, somebody take me back to the days
Before this was a job, before I got paid
Before it ever mattered what I had in my bank
Yeah, back when I was tryin' to get a tip at Subway
And back when I was rappin' for the hell of it
But nowadays we rappin' to stay relevant
I'm guessin' that if we can make some wishes outta' airplanes
Then maybe yo maybe I'll go back to the days
Before the politics that we call the rap game
And back when ain't nobody listen to my mixtape
And back before I tried to cover up my slang
But this is for the hater, what's up Bobby Ray?
So can I get a wish
To end the politics
And get back to the music
That started this shit?
So here I stand and then again I say
I'm hopin' we can make some wishes outta' airplanes

Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky are like shooting stars? (Shooting stars)
I could really use a wish right now (Wish right now)
Wish right now (Wish right now)
Wish right now (Wish right now)
Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky
Are like shooting stars? (Shooting stars)
I could really use a wish right now (Wish right now)
Wish right now (Wish right now)
Wish right now (Wish right now)

I could really use a wish right now (oh, oh-oh oh)
I, I, I could really use a wish right now
Like, like, like shootin' stars (oh, oh oh)
I, I, I could really use a wish right now

A wish, a wish right now
(A wish right now)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eminem ft B.o.B feat. Hayley Williams's song "Airplanes" are reflective of the struggles and pressures that come with fame and success. The song begins with a wish to escape reality and find comfort in the idea of shooting stars being airplanes in the night sky. The repetition of "Wish right now" emphasizes the desperation to find some relief from the hardships one is facing.

The second verse is a reflection of the sacrifices and compromises that come with success. The glamour and excitement of the partying and fame eventually fade, leaving the artist feeling empty and alone. The lyrics speak to the fear of losing relevance and the pressure to constantly produce more music to remain in the limelight.

The chorus repeats the wish that shooting stars could grant the desire for a simpler time, before the politics of the music industry and the stress of fame took over. The song serves as a reminder that even successful artists face their own struggles and insecurities.

[Eminem:]
Alright let's pretend Marshall Mathers never picked up a pen
Let's pretend things would have been no different
Pretend he procrastinated, had no motivation
Pretend he just made excuses that were so paper thin they could blow away with the wind
Marshall, you're never gonna make it makes no sense to play the game there ain't no way that you'll win
Pretend he just stayed outside all day and played with his friends
Pretend he even had a friend to say was his friend
And it wasn't time to move and schools weren't changing again
He wasn't socially awkward and just strange as a kid
He had a father and his mother wasn't crazy as shit
And he never dreamed he could rip stadiums and just lazy as shit
Fuck a talent show in a gymnasium, bitch, you won't amount to shit quit daydreaming kid
You need to get your cranium checked you thinking like an alien and just ain't realistic
Now pretend they ain't just make him angry with this shit
And there was no one he could even aim when he's pissed it
And his alarm went off to wake him but he didn't make it to the Rap Olympics
Slept through his plane and he missed it
He's gon' have a hard time explaining to Hailie and Lainie these food stamps and this WIC shit
'Cause he never risked shit he hoped and he wished it but it didn't fall in his lap so he ain't even here
He pretends that

This song came out during the worst possible time in my life. It managed to come on the radio on the way to and from the hospital to see my son. I couldn't ever turn it off though just cause of the chorus. And every day I wished on stars airplanes and anything else that could be up there. It was worth a shot.

@human-machine

I hope everything went well and you are doing well!

And it seems like yesterday..
It was just a dream..
But those days are gone..
And just memories... :(
