Straight To You
Emm Gryner Lyrics

And the swallows have sharpened their beaks
This is the time of our great undoing,
This is the time that I'll come running
Straight to you, for I am captured
Straight to you, for I am captured
Once again.
And the candle, it gutters on the ledge
And our sorrow, it comes a stealing
And I'll cry but I'll come running
Straight to you, for I am captured
Straight to you, for I am captured
One more time.
And gone are the days of rainbows
Gone are the nights of swinging from the stars
For the seas will swallow up the mountains
And the sky will throw thunderbolts and sparks
Straight at you but I'll come running
Straight to you, yes I'll come a running
One more time.
And heaven has denied us its kingdom
And the saints they're all drunk, and howling at the moon
And the chariots of angels are colliding
And I'll run but I'll come running
Straight to you, for I am captured
Straight to you, for I am captured
Once more time.
Emm Gryner's poignant ballad "Straight To You" is a heart-wrenching exploration of a relationship that is on the verge of falling apart. The opening lines set the stage for the song's overarching theme of disintegration: "The towers of ivory are crumbling / And the swallows have sharpened their beaks." These metaphorical images suggest a sense of destruction and impending danger, conveying the sense that the world is coming apart at the seams. Against this backdrop, the singer poignantly declares that she will continue to run straight to the person she loves, even in the face of adversity.
The song's second verse further underscores the sense of melancholy and loss. The light in the window is fading, and the candle gutters out, perhaps symbolizing the last embers of hope in a relationship that is slowly dying. The mood is one of sadness and vulnerability, as the singer acknowledges that sorrow is stealing in, but still, she will come running straight to her lover, for she is captured by their love. The final verse takes on an apocalyptic turn, imagining a world in which the natural order has been disrupted, and the sky throws thunderbolts and sparks straight at the object of the singer's love. Despite this chaos and upheaval, the singer reaffirms her commitment that she will always come running straight to her lover, even if Heaven itself has denied them its kingdom.
Overall, "Straight to You" is an achingly beautiful song that speaks to the universal human experience of love, loss, and resilience in the face of adversity.
