We're All Alone
Emma Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your waistcoat holds a pocketwatch,
I’s to dot and some t’s to cross
You’re doing all your very best so you can insure success

I think success is not so tough
Go the same direction for long enough
And, yes, sometimes it might feel slow, but you'll get where you want to go
But first I think you should know

We're all mad here
Insane from time to play, and good conversation
It's not bad here
You'd be surprised to find what turns out to be salvation
Don't be sad dear
Where I've missed milestones, it's okay, there's something else there
I'm quite mad, dear
I think you must be too
Or you would be elsewhere

You say you fear you're running late
For a very important date
How will you be where you want to be
By the time you are forty-three

And sure I maybe feel behind
When it comes to high school reunion time
Think of all the fun I've had
It's hard to feel less than glad
Then again I'm completely mad

We're all mad here
Insane from time to play, and good conversation
It's not bad here
You'd be surprised to find what turns out to be salvation
Don't be sad dear
Where I've missed milestones, it's okay, there's something else there
I'm quite mad, dear

I think you must be too
Or you would be elsewhere

Overall Meaning

In Emma's song We’re All Alone, the first verse talks about how the person she is singing to is wearing a waistcoat that holds a pocket watch. She mentions that they are doing their best in order to insure success, but also reminds them that success isn't really that difficult. Emma then goes on to talk about how going in the same direction for long enough will lead them to where they want to go, and that they shouldn't be worried about the pace at which they’re going. In the chorus, she sings that everyone is actually insane here because of time and good conversation, but that it's actually a good thing. She says that it’s not bad being here in that state, and that salvation can be found in seemingly unlikely places. The chorus ends with Emma reminding the listener that they shouldn't be sad about missed milestones, but instead try to find something else to be happy about. Emma then admits to being completely mad, and suggests that the listener is as well or they would be elsewhere.

The second verse speaks to the listener’s fear of running late for an important date, and how they worry they won’t be where they want to be by the time they’re forty-three. Emma admits that sometimes she feels behind, especially when high school reunions come around. However, she reassures the listener that it's hard to feel anything but glad when she thinks about all the fun she’s had in her own life. She ends by reiterating the chorus, reminding the listener that everyone is a little mad or they wouldn't be here.

The song is a great reminder to enjoy life and not worry too much about the pace at which one appears to be going. The fact that everyone is a little mad here can actually be a good thing, and salvation can be found in unexpected places. The message is powerful, especially for those who are anxious about their lives and accomplishments.

Outside the rain begins and it may never end
So cry no more on the shore a dream
Will take us out to sea
Forever more forever more
Close your eyes and dream
And and you can be with me
'Neath the waves through the caves of hours
Long forgotten now
We're all alone we're all alone

Close the window calm the light
And it will be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out let it all begin
Learn how to pretend

Once a story's told
It can't help but grow old
Roses do lovers too
So cast your seasons to the wind
And hold me dear oh hold me dear

Close the window calm the light
And it will be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out let it all begin
All's forgotten now
We're all alone oh oh we're all alone
Close the window calm the light
And it will be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out let it all begin
All's forgotten now
We're all alone we're all alone
Let it out let it all begin
Owe it to the wind my love
