Marked For Death
Emma Ruth Rundle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

it was right that we did meet each other in each other's eyes
it was right that we did see each other in our shadow sides
it was wrong then too that crazy love, loves crazy as it does
and each of us and both of us so crazy; as it was

who else is going to love someone like you that's marked for death
who else is going to be with you when you breathe your last
who else is going to take my place and hold and keep you safe/sane
who else is going to stay

you were right on time to break your head and make the death bed
you were right on time to crash those galaxies and flat-line
you were right on time to make the light inside of me a life
you were right on time to meet me, crazy love, and watch us die

who else is going to love someone like you that's marked for death
who else is going to be with you when you breathe your last
who else is going to take my place and hold and keep you safe/sane
who else would ever stay
who else would ever stay

who else would
who else would
who else would ever stay
who else would
who else would
who else would ever stay
who else would
who else would
who else would ever stay
who else is going to love someone like me

who else is going to love someone like me,
that's marked for death?
who else is going to be with me when i breathe at all?

who else would ever take your place and hold and keep me safe?
who else would ever stay?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Marked for Death" by Emma Ruth Rundle speak of a tumultuous and intense love that is both beautiful and destructive. The singer reflects on the time she spent with her lover, acknowledging that they were meant to meet and that they saw each other's dark sides. However, the love they shared was so crazy and consuming that it was almost like a death sentence. They were both marked for death in a way, and no one else would ever love them or understand them the way they did.

The chorus of the song is particularly poignant, as the singer questions who else would ever love someone like her that is marked for death. She wonders who else would be by her side when she takes her last breath, and who else would hold her and keep her safe. The answer, of course, is that no one else could ever love her the way her lover did. They were both drawn to each other, even though their love was bound to end in tragedy.

Overall, "Marked for Death" is a powerful exploration of love, mortality, and the human condition. It is a deeply emotional and reflective song that will resonate with anyone who has ever loved and lost.

I have been obsessively listening to this song this whole week. It’s both soothing and hauntingly beautiful.

"hauntingly beautiful" - no better way to describe it.

I wholeheartedly agree

It's like a more emotionally damaged, stoner doom Mazzy Star, which is completely incredible. The upright bass adds an element that's beyond cool. Love it.

This song is amazing, but it's also about a dark relationship, based on self-loathing that recognizes the other's self-loathing; it satisfies the insecure part of you that needs to see vulnerability equal to your own to really be honest. This song is angry. He has withdrawn, one assumes. She is threatening him; you are terrible, only someone as terrible as me would love you. And then she admits - this all applies to herself, that I am terrible too, and only someone as bad as me would love me. It's dysfunctional, but it's also very raw, honest, painful, and, I suspect, resonates with more people than would ever admit it. Crazy, dark, sensual, decaying, desperate and beautiful -- the same drivers behind the sublime Blade Runner aesthetic. This song is a rare jewel and deserves more attention, and more usage, perhaps in a movie or series.

... which it got - I'm here after watching The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart

This song has one of the most beautiful openings. I listen to this song over and over and I cannot get enough. I bought it on vinyl and it’s so warm and deep, like a bath you never want to get out of.
