Nemesis
Emmure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No I don't care what they want
I'll never be what you want me to be
(What you want me to be)
Don't give a fuck what you think
(Fuck you)
Just get the fuck away from me
(Away from me)
I swear I tried my best to ignore it all
(And walk away)
But it's too late
I want to spit the poison back in your face

No I don't care what they want
I'll never be what you want me to be
Don't give a fuck what you think
Just get the fuck away from me

That's the way of the world
They want to see you live on your knees
When you refuse to conform another door shuts

No I don't care what they want
I'll never be what you want me to be
(What you want me to be)
Don't give a fuck what you think
(Fuck you)
Just get the fuck away from me
(Get the fuck away from me)

And you can beg all you want
'Cause nothing is going to fucking change
You sealed your fate the day you crossed me

This is my message to a dying world
I fucking hate you
You'll get what you deserve

This is my message to a dying world
I fucking hate you
You'll get what you deserve
(Do you hear me now!?)

This is my message to a dying world
(You piece of shit!)
I fucking hate you
You'll get what you deserve
(Run, Run!)

This is my message to a dying world
I fucking hate you
You'll get what you deserve

Do you hear me now?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Emmure's song "Nemesis" express a sense of defiance and rejection towards societal expectations and pressures to conform. The singer asserts their unwillingness to be molded into what others want them to be, and their frustration with those who try to impose their views. The line "That's the way of the world, they want to see you live on your knees" highlights the pressure to conform to societal norms and expectations, even if it means sacrificing personal values and beliefs.

The intense, aggressive tone of the lyrics and the use of profanity adds to the overall message of rebellion against societal norms. The repeated refrain of "I fucking hate you, you'll get what you deserve" emphasizes a sense of anger towards those who try to control and mold the singer, and a desire for vengeance against those who have crossed them.

The way that I see this band, as a whole, is a guilty pleasure- a "junk food" band, if you will. Yes, the lack of musicianship is apparent, and for the most part, it is pretty generic when compared to, from what I saw, Animals As Leaders and other bands that are more driven and technical (why AAL was used in the first place to compare to something from a totally different genre is beyond me).

However-

This is one of those bands that make music specifically to invoke anger when listened to alone and to mosh and knock the shit out of each other when seen live. It's exactly like club music- you would not normally listen to songs like Where Them Girls At? unless you were at the club where the monotony is ignored and everyone is dancing or alone while in a drunken stuper.

Same thing here. Emmure is usually a band to mosh to at concerts, and club music is usually for clubbing at bars. With "hardcore" music like Emmure, you participate just to have fun, not to try and bask in the genius of the musicality of the band.

You may see it differently, but this is how I've observed it. Makes sense when you actually participate in moshes, though. The heavier the music, the more aggressive people will get. It doesn't matter if the music is technical, just as long as it is heavy or brutal. This is, unfortunately, the sad truth in most "hardcore" bands today.

Before you go flying off the handle with "Oh, so you don't like technical music?" comments (believe me, some people are really that stupid to assume that), I enjoy kinds of music, and am a musician myself. I revel in technicality in perfect harmony with musicality, but I also like to indulge in "junk food" bands like Emmure to blow off some steam and knock a few heads in inside the pit. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one here.

Guys I can confirm this, Frankie Palmeri is one of the coolest dudes you'll ever meet. Met him after the Eternal Enemies tour just chilling around. Seriously he's always either up for a conversation or he's willing to take a picture. The dude is pretty damn cool to the say the least. Even if you talk shit about his music I still think he's a good person at heart. Trust me on this one. But if you had negative experiences with this guy. Go ahead tell me.

@justinyo1796

Alex koehlers pretyy cool too. Pretty much same thing. CG was the only band chillin with fans after the AA show with btf and upon a burning body
