Throwing Stones
Empathy Test Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Flicking through yesterday's news
Slipping my neck into the noose again
Well it fits so well.
Doesn't know where her loyalties lie -
Then again neither do I.
Going out getting drunk on gin
Waking up in her arms but then I
Never knew it would be so hard
Never knew I would be a part of this
Bitterness.

I try to fall awake but I still sleep
Wait for a week but I am weak
And resolutions fail
And once again I'm throwing stones
At your window.
Throwing stones
At your window.

Stand in the payphone count to ten
But you won't call me back again.
Sends a little shiver right through me
When I hear you running down to me.
But I know you'll only turn away
‘Cause you've got nothing left to say to me
Well; hear me out.

I try to fall awake but I still sleep
Wait for a week but I am weak.
And resolutions fail
And once again I'm throwing stones
At your window.
Throwing stones
At your window.
Throwing stones
At your window.

Throwing Stones
At your window.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Empathy Test's song Throwing Stones reflect the emotional struggle of a protagonist who is battling with the aftermath of a broken relationship. The opening lines of "Flicking through yesterday's news, slipping my neck into the noose again" show that the singer is feeling trapped by the past, continually reminding himself of the negative experiences that led to the fallout of his relationship. The line "Doesn't know where her loyalties lie - then again neither do I" reveals that the relationship was plagued by uncertainty and a lack of trust.

The singer then describes his attempt to run away from his problems by going out and getting drunk. However, even though he has the comfort of being in his partner's arms, he is still struggling with the bitterness and difficulty that comes with a broken relationship. The chorus of "I try to fall awake but I still sleep, wait for a week but I am weak, and resolutions fail" highlights that the singer is still struggling to come to terms with what has happened, and is continuously failing in his attempts to move on.

The song's title, "Throwing Stones," is reflected in the last verse where the singer stands at a payphone counting to ten, hoping for his partner to call him back. He is counting on the hope that his partner will hear him out and offer some closure, but he is left disappointed. The repetition of the chorus is used to show that the singer is stuck in a cycle of pain, confusion and regret.
