Empire of the Sun Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Heading for the city lights in 1975
We share in each other
Nearer than father
The scent of a lemon drips from your eyes
We are the people that rule the world
A force running in every boy and girl
Take me now' we can try
We lived an adventure
Love in the Summer
Followed the sun till night
Reminiscing other times of life
For each every other
The feeling was stronger
The shock hit eleven' Got lost in your eyes
I can't do well when I think you're gonna leave me
But I know I try
Are you gonna leave me now
Can't you be believing now
I can't do well when I think you're gonna leave me
But I know I try
Are you gonna leave me now
Can't you be believing now
Can you remember and humanize
It was still where we'd energized
Lie in the sand and visualize
Like it's 75 again
We are the people that rule the world
A force running in every boy and girl
All rejoicing in the world
Take me now' we can try
I can't do well when I think you're gonna leave me
But I know I try
Are you gonna leave me now
Can't you be believing now
I can't do well when I think you're gonna leave me
But I know I try
Are you gonna leave me now
Can't you be believing now
I know everything about you
You know everything about me
Know everything about us
I know everything about you
You know everything about me
Know everything about us
I can't do well when I think you're gonna leave me
But I know I try
Are you gonna leave me now
Can't you be believing now
I can't do well when I think you're gonna leave me
But I know I try
Are you gonna leave me now
Can't you be believing now
I can't do well when I think you're gonna leave me
But I know I try
Are you gonna leave me now
Can't you be believing now
The lyrics to Empire of the Sun/Wawa's song We Are The People paint a vivid picture of a nostalgic and carefree time in the past, where the world seemed open to endless possibilities. Swimming in December, heading to the city in 1975, and following the sun till night are all images that conjure up a sense of freedom and exploration. The song's lyrics suggest that while the world may be ruled by powerful forces, there's a force within every person, a resilience and sense of adventure that refuses to be crushed. The line "we are the people that rule the world" is a recognition of this inner strength, a call to embrace one's own power and live life to the fullest.
The song's message is one of hope and unity, celebrating the connection between people and the power that comes from shared experience. The repeated refrain of "we are the people" reinforces this idea, and the inclusion of "all rejoicing in the world" speaks to a sense of global community. However, the song also acknowledges the fear and insecurities that come with any meaningful connection. Lines like "I can't do well when I think you're gonna leave me" and "can't you be believing now" express a vulnerability and longing for assurance that is common in any relationship.

Oh, come on. This is a pure-pop confectionary! Every once in a while, a band will pop through with nothing but a pop record. It works.
