Anywhere
Empires Lyrics

Looks like you've been hurt
I'm told to stay here
Police all gather around
They want to know where I've been
You could be anywhere, by design
I forgot you everywhere
You could be anywhere
I search for months around
I finally see you dancing off the ground
I run to meet you
I've been in this room locked inside with you, with you
You could be anywhere, by design
I forgot you everywhere
And won't you come back here?
You could be anywhere
I try not to do this
Your hair's so long, like it was years ago
My fingers needed to touch you like I should have known
I don't think I should stay here
You must but I should go
There's nothing left to do here
I must leave time alone
You could be anywhere, by design
I forgot you everywhere
And won't you come back here?
You could be anywhere
The lyrics of Empires' song "Anywhere" depict a longing for someone who has been hurt and is now absent. The singer of the song touches the person's clothes, trying to feel closer to them, but they are told to stay put as the police question them. The idea that the person could be anywhere adds to the sense of loss and disconnection.
As the song continues, the singer reveals that they have been searching for the person for months and finally see them dancing. There is a desire to reconnect, but also a sense of hesitation and uncertainty. The line, "My fingers needed to touch you like I should have known," suggests regret for not having reached out sooner.
The repetition of the phrase "You could be anywhere" emphasizes the sense of distance and the difficulty in finding the person. The chorus also includes the line "I forgot you everywhere," which could imply that the singer has been unable to escape their thoughts, even when the person is physically absent.
Overall, "Anywhere" is a melancholic song that speaks to the pain of missing someone and the desire to reconnect. The emotive vocals and instrumentation, with its blend of electronic and rock elements, add to the sense of longing and regret.
