Swinging with the breeze
And I know I should have never let go
In the middle of the road
You told me to let go let it go – go back to the things we know
The sun comes down
the clouds turn red
We'll bury ourselves in the sand
we'll let the cities burn let'em burn – we're not going back at all
Sometimes it makes me cry
So would you hold me to the end of the line
Would you hold me till the end of time
And show me bright lights
Childhood dreams are never put to bed
We are just waiting for our turn
olive trees in our head
we'll let the cities burn let'em burn – we're not ever gonna return
Sometimes it makes me cry
So would you hold me to the end of the line
Would you hold me till the end of time
And show me bright lights
The first two lines of the song, "Swinging softly, swinging with the breeze," are actually quite symbolic. The imagery of swinging represents the cycle of life, the highs and lows, the good and the bad. However, in this case, the singer had let go of the swing and is now in the middle of the road. "You told me to let go, let it go – go back to the things we know" suggests that the singer had taken a risk or was trying something new and the person they were with wanted them to go back to the familiar and safe.
The second verse is quite dark, and the lyrics suggest that something quite significant is happening. The sun is setting, and the clouds are turning red, but the concrete is calling. The phrase "concrete calling" suggests cities and modernity are calling, but the singer wants no part of it. Instead, they want to bury themselves in the sand and let the cities burn. While the lyrics do not explicitly say what the cities represent, they may be a metaphor for modernity, progress, and capitalism.
The refrain, "Sometimes it makes me cry, so would you hold me to the end of the line?" seems to suggest that the singer is struggling with either fear or loneliness, or a mixture of both. They seek comfort and assurance from another person, someone who will hold them till the end of the line, and show them bright lights. The bright lights can represent hope, happiness, or a better future.
