First of all, this version is absutely sublime, thank you very much for sharing it! ! It means" Margothon fall in the water"
James McPherson
This is sung beautifully, but I
think Francis Poulenc would be surprised if he knew he was credited with composing this old French folksong.

Nice track, If you like beautiful french female vocals try some Edwige, her album Energie Lumiere Amour is great.

This is an old folk song.
Margoton goes to to the water with her pail.
The fountain was deep, so she fell in.
Sigh, sigh, sigh, sigh,
Thought Margoton.
Thee young lads passed by.
What would you give us, pretty one, for us to pull you out?
Pull me out first and then we'll see.
When the pretty girl was pulled from the fountain, she started singing.
That's not what we asked for
We wanted your heart
My little heart, sirs, is not for men who pay for my love.
Sigh, sigh, sigh, sigh,
Thought Margoton

I actually realized the lyrics are a bit different in this version and it's arranged a bit differently. In this version they ask for a kiss and the song ends there.

From what I got, Maggie went to the fountain with her bucket but it was broken so she fell to the bottom. When three young and merry men passed by they asked what she would give them if they rescued her. She says Get me out and we'll see... so when they get her out she starts singing and they say that's not what they want, but her little heart. She says her heart is not for kids but for men with hair in their faces =oP

lyrics in french and english, not quite the same in each link, I would go with the french video but you know folksongs usually get lost through ages and lyrics accommodate over the years :)
