Are You Lonesome Tonight
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics

Do you miss me tonight?
Are you sorry we drifted apart?
Does your memory stray to a bright sunny day?
When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?
Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare?
Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there?
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
SPOKEN
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?
Engelbert Humperdinck's song "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" is a classic ballad about a lover who is reminiscing on the past and wondering if their former partner still feels the same. The song begins with a series of questions that suggest the singer is feeling lonely and thinking about their ex-lover. They ask if their former partner misses them and if they regret drifting apart. The lyrics then become more specific, referring to a moment when they shared a happy memory together.
The second verse of the song is particularly poignant, with its evocative imagery of an empty chair and a lonely doorstep. The singer wonders if their ex-lover's heart is filled with pain, and if they should come back to try and heal that pain. The spoken section towards the end of the song only adds to the emotional intensity, as the singer asks these questions directly to their former partner and waits for a response.
Overall, "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" is a beautifully written and performed love ballad that touches on universal themes of loss, regret, and longing. It remains a timeless classic that has been covered by many other artists over the years.
