Blue Christmas
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll be so blue just thinking about you
Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree
Won't be the same dear, if you're not here with me
And when the blue snowflakes start falling
That's when those blue memories start calling
You'll be doing alright with your Christmas of white
You'll be doing alright with your Christmas of white
But I'll have a blue, blue Christmas
In this classic Christmas song, Engelbert Humperdinck sings about the sadness and loneliness that comes with spending Christmas without a loved one. The lyrics express a deep longing and ache for someone who is no longer around to share in the holiday festivities. The line "I'll have a blue Christmas without you" sets the tone for the entire song, as it emphasizes the singer's sorrow and pain. The use of the color blue further reinforces this sentiment, as blue is often associated with sadness and sorrow.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of memories and how they can be bittersweet reminders of what is lost. The line "That's when those blue memories start calling" signifies how memories of past Christmases spent with the loved one can heighten the feelings of loneliness and sadness during the present holiday season. The contrast between a "Christmas of white" and a "blue Christmas" highlights the stark difference between the singer's experience and that of their loved one. While the loved one may be enjoying a Christmas filled with joy and love, the singer is left to deal with their pain on their own.
