Not sure if the writers of this incredible song wrote about fact or fiction but...as a listener you can't help but to put yourself in their position- Enge interprets with such feeling that he makes you believe that this feeling of such loss actually happened to him.
That alone, shows this man's immense talent as a singer. He is simply the BEST.

When I was young around 9 11 or so my dad and my uncles all my father's first cousins after birthday party or wedding right family function David sit around and coffee table some would be sitting on the sofa or loveseat and some will be sitting down on the floor next to the coffee table drinking Crown Royal sodas ice and they would listen to this song and they would cry and this would be around the time in the a.m. And all of us kids would just watch 30 years later we're doing the same thing and our kids are doing what we did just watched

Where is "How Do I Say Goodbye?" It used to be on YouTube and I fell in love with the song, It was a live performance and he sang it beautifully. One of the posters on the comment board said he had recently lost his mother and I suppose that is why you could hear the emotion in his voice. I had recently lost my wonderful husband and the song touched me deeply. Where is it now? Though the title is similiar to this one, this is not the song I'm referring to. If it has been deleted, PLEASE bring it back!!

I know which song you mean. The title is "How Do I Stop Loving You?" Yes, he had just lost his mother. What's more, she asked him to sing it onstage to remember her by. I can't imagine how hard that must have been!

Searching for it now, I find that all trace of it has gone. At one time there was also a lovely studio recording by Barry Manilow as well as a studio recording by Engelbert in addition to a couple of concert videos. All of them gone now..

YouTube removes videos all the time - they have removed some of mine. To be honest, I don't know how much good it would do to re-post, since eventually the same songs would probably be removed.

When you lose your wife through cessation of her life, and on top of the despair of being left alone, you realize too little, too late there were things you could have done, things you could have said. To find as ten years and the menacing darkness which to a point will always endure closes in for another encore, I never said goodbye to Mary (Wife), never got to because I found her as I returned from work and shopping that night, removed from the living, from my life (cardiac arrest). I have gone on without scheming to self-torture myself, but I WILL never, and I mean NEVER credit this tragic affliction by saying that the tragedy built strength in character, and made me a better person. I don't have that spunk, that gristle, and I don't care. The damage was done, the wound may have failed to take MY life somehow, but the scar will forever hurt. I will NEVER agree Mary should have died, and to repeat and I quote "I Never Said Goodbye!!!", end of quote, and this song says it all.
